The best month to get married in Costa Rica

Choosing your wedding date is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. In Costa Rica, with its diverse microclimates and distinct seasons, the time of year can significantly impact your wedding experience. To help you navigate this decision, I’ve put together a month-by-month guide, highlighting the key characteristics of each month for weddings.

Choosing the Right Month for You

Each month in Costa Rica offers a unique experience. If you prioritize guaranteed sunshine and don’t mind higher prices and crowds, January, February, or December are excellent choices. If you dream of a lush, intimate wedding and are open to the possibility of rain, the green season months (May-October) offer incredible value and stunning scenery. The shoulder months of April and November provide a nice balance between weather and crowds.

By considering these factors and exploring the detailed month-by-month guides, you can choose the perfect time to say “I do” in beautiful Costa Rica.

Weather Through My Lens

March continues the dry season, with sunny days and temperatures between 76°F and 89°F (24°C to 32°C). Beaches and coastal areas like Tamarindo and the Nicoya Peninsula enjoy clear skies, while mountain areas remain cool and refreshing.

Photographer’s Tip: The bright sun can create strong shadows. I often use reflectors to soften the light and ensure even illumination.

After years of shooting across the country, here are my top March wedding locations:

    • Coastal Areas (Tamarindo, Nicoya Peninsula): Perfect for beach weddings with consistent sunshine.
    • Mountain Regions (Poás Volcano, Irazu Volcano): Offer breathtaking views and cooler temperatures for a unique wedding experience.

October: Embracing the Heart of the Green Season (and Celebrating Coffee)

October is typically the wettest month in Costa Rica, offering a truly immersive green season experience. While rain is frequent and often heavy, the landscapes are incredibly lush, and the lack of crowds provides a peaceful and intimate setting for a wedding. It’s a month for couples who truly embrace nature and don’t mind a little (or a lot) of rain. And, importantly, it’s a month to celebrate Costa Rica’s rich coffee heritage!

    Weather Through My Lens

October is the peak of the rainy season, with afternoon downpours and often cloudy skies. Mornings can be sunny, but rain is frequent and heavy, especially in the afternoon. Temperatures range from 71°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C), and humidity is high. Coastal areas, particularly the Pacific side, experience the most rain, while the Central Valley and highlands tend to be cooler and mistier. According to 2024 forecasts, conditions are expected to be less rainy than normal in the Caribbean and Northeast Zone, and more rainy in the other regions.

Photographer’s Tip: While October brings heavy rains to most of the country, the Caribbean coast offers excellent photography conditions with reduced humidity and rainfall. Along the Caribbean, you’ll find clearer skies and more stable weather, perfect for outdoor shoots. However, if you’re shooting in other regions, embrace the dramatic rainy conditions – capture reflections in puddles, vibrant greens against dark clouds, and misty atmospheres for unique images. Waterproof your equipment and have indoor backup locations ready when working in the rainy areas.

      Location Insights

After years of shooting across the country, here are my top October wedding locations:

      • Central Valley: While rain is very likely, the gardens and haciendas are incredibly lush and green, creating a beautiful backdrop. Prioritize venues with good indoor spaces.
      • Highlands (Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota): The cloud forests are enveloped in mist, creating a truly magical and ethereal atmosphere.
      • Caribbean Coast: While traditionally very rainy, October 2025 is predicted to be less rainy than usual here, which might make it a more viable option.

What I Love About October Weddings

      • Private Atmosphere: With the fewest tourists, your wedding will be incredibly intimate and peaceful.
      • Beautiful Greenery: The rain makes Costa Rica’s rainforests, beaches, and waterfalls incredibly scenic.
      • Affordability: You’ll find the most budget-friendly options for venues, services, and accommodations.
      • A Celebration of Coffee: October is International Coffee Month, a perfect time to celebrate Costa Rica’s world-renowned coffee culture.

      Planning Considerations

Based on my experience with October weddings:

      • Frequent and Heavy Rain: Prepare for consistent rain, especially in the afternoons. An indoor venue or a very reliable covered outdoor space is absolutely essential.
      • Humidity and Mosquitoes: Humidity is very high, particularly on the coast, so prioritize lightweight and breathable clothing. Mosquito repellent is a must.

      • International Coffee Day Celebrations: Look for local coffee farms or cafes hosting special events or promotions in honor of International Coffee Day (October 1st).
