Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion, or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Costa Rica.
What documents do I need to get married in Costa Rica?
You’ll need valid passports for both partners, original birth certificates with recent issue dates typically within 6 months, and if previously married, original divorce decree or death certificate of former spouse. All documents must be apostilled or authenticated before arriving in Costa Rica, and documents in languages other than Spanish must be officially translated.
Lawyers handle marriages and the paperwork ranges from $400 to $700. It’s quite simple to get married but you need to coordinate with a lawyer beforehand. The higher price would be if you want documents translated and notarized in English so you’re able to also register the marriage in your home country.

How long do you need to be in Costa Rica before getting married?

What is the best time of year to elope in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica has two seasons: Rainy season from May to mid-November, and Dry season (also called “Summer”) from December to April. The Caribbean coast is the exception and has rain throughout the year, the Pacific coast is drier.
Dry Season (December-April): Known as the high and dry season, these are Costa Rica’s “summer” months when the sun shines all day, every day, and daytime temperatures soar. December and January are fresh off the wet season so they’re typically breezy and still very green. February and March have calmer weather but drier landscapes. This is peak wedding season, book 3-6 months in advance.
Green Season (May-November): Costa Rica’s green season sets the country ablaze with every hue and shade of green. The landscapes are spectacular, waterfalls run thick, and tropical flowers explode with blooms. It will probably rain every day, sometimes for hours. BUT, you’ll have fewer tourists, better rates, and some of my most dramatic, romantic photos happen in misty rain or right after storms when the light is magical.
My recommendation: February-March for optimal weather, or July-August for a sweet spot of green landscapes with shorter, isolated showers.

Just keep in mind you’ll need at least 2 witnesses who are not related to you for legal ceremonies. If you’re having friends at your wedding this will suffice. If you’re eloping privately, your venue or vendors may count as witnesses.
