Costa Rica Elopements: Everything You Need for Your Perfect Day.

What exactly is an elopement wedding?

An elopement is an intimate wedding ceremony, typically with just the couple or a very small group of guests (usually 10 or fewer) the officiant and your Elopement Photographer. Modern elopements focus on creating a personal, authentic experience in a meaningful location rather than hosting a traditional large reception. Couples choose to elope to prioritize their connection, reduce stress, and often marry in adventurous or stunning destinations like Costa Rica where they can exchange vows beneath a waterfall in a private rainforest sanctuary or on golden sands as waves provide the ceremony soundtrack

How much does it cost to elope to Costa Rica?

In 2023, the average Costa Rica wedding cost was $8,910, which is significantly lower than the $35,000 price tag of a traditional wedding. The average cost of a destination wedding in Costa Rica ranges from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the number of wedding guests, venue, and package inclusions.

For a true elopement (just the couple), you can expect to invest $5,000-$12,000 total including flights, accommodation, photography ($2,000-$3,500), and all ceremony elements. The biggest investment should be exceptional photography, since these images become your primary way to share and remember your day forever.

Is eloping selfish or disrespectful to family?

Absolutely not. Choosing to elope means you’re prioritizing what will best serve you and your partner, not excluding people you love. Over 60% of people associate words like “adventure,” “freedom,” and “romance” with elopements, and 92% said they wouldn’t think negatively if someone eloped.

Many families understand and support couples who choose to elope, especially when you communicate your reasons clearly. You can always celebrate with family afterward through a reception, dinner, or viewing party for your photos and video. What matters most is that your wedding day reflects your values and relationship.

How far in advance do you need to plan an elopement in Costa Rica?

Twelve months is a nice sweet spot for planning an elopement, though you can technically plan one in 30 days. For Costa Rica specifically, 2-3 months is ideal to secure your preferred photographer and dates, though 3-6 months in advance is better for peak season (December-April) or if you have specific date requirements.

One of the benefits of eloping is flexibility, you avoid the “book a year in advance” pressure of traditional weddings.

Can you have an officiant and make it legal when you elope in Costa Rica?

Getting legally married in Costa Rica is a simple and stress-free process. To make it official, you’ll need a registered officiant who will take care of all the paperwork and legal formalities. Once the ceremony is complete, the officiant will submit the marriage documents to the Costa Rican Civil Registry.

Alternatively, many people choose to get legally married at home because it’s easier than dealing with marriage laws abroad, and save their elopement day for the fun stuff. This gives you complete flexibility with timing, location, and ceremony style while avoiding legal bureaucracy.

What do you wear to an elopement in Costa Rica?

Whatever makes you feel incredible! Many couples choose their dream wedding attire, full gown and suit, while others opt for something more practical for adventure. Keep your elopement attire in your carry-on and never check any items you’ll need on your wedding day. Lay your attire out in the garment bag padded with tissue paper, roll it up and attach it to your luggage. Once you arrive, hang it up and use wrinkle-release spray or a portable steamer.

For Costa Rica elopements, consider lightweight, breathable fabrics for the tropical climate and footwear appropriate for your activities (hiking boots for waterfalls vs. sandals for beaches). The beauty of eloping is you can wear exactly what feels authentic to you.

Do you exchange vows when you elope in Costa Rica?

Most couples exchange vows, it’s often the most meaningful part of the ceremony. You can write personal vows, use traditional ones, or create a hybrid. The intimacy of an elopement makes it an incredibly powerful moment for sharing promises, and as your Costa Rica elopement photographer, I document every meaningful glance, tear, and celebration with an artistic eye that preserves not just how your day looked, but how it felt.

What do you do after eloping in Costa Rica?

Couples and loved ones can spend their days exploring cloud rainforests and end their evenings reclining on oceanfront loungers. After your ceremony, the day is yours! Options in Costa Rica include: hiking to waterfalls, private beach picnics, zip-lining through the rainforest, soaking in volcanic hot springs, wildlife watching, surfing, or simply relaxing with a romantic dinner. This is your opportunity to actually experience your wedding day together rather than hosting guests.

Costa Rica vs. Mexico for our elopement, which should we choose?

Both are beautiful, but they offer very different experiences:

Choose Costa Rica if you want:

  • To experience rainforests, volcanoes, hiking, and being one with nature, ideal for active couples who want to visit national parks, hike volcanoes, or explore eco-parks.
  • Eco-friendly tourism, farm-to-table experiences, and sustainability-minded accommodations.
  • Diverse landscapes (beaches, jungle, waterfalls, cloud forests) all within a few hours
  • Lots of opportunities for adventure like zip-lining, whitewater rafting, and nature experiences with wildlife, waterfalls, hot springs, and volcanoes.
  • A more intimate, boutique experience with authentic local culture

Choose Mexico if you want:

  • More central location with shorter, less expensive flights for you and your guests.
  • Traditional “Caribbean postcard” white sand beaches
  • More all-inclusive resort options at lower price points
  • Larger tourism infrastructure with more vendor choices

Bottom line: If you’re looking for crystal clear turquoise water and white sugar sand beaches, choose the Caribbean. If you want beautiful beaches and lots of opportunities for adventure and nature, choose Costa Rica. Costa Rica offers more adventure and biodiversity, while Mexico offers easier logistics and more traditional beach aesthetics.

How do flight costs compare between Costa Rica and other destinations?

Air fare is a major consideration, flights to San Jose, Costa Rica, typically run under $300 roundtrip from major US cities, while favorite Caribbean islands like Bequia cost around $850 roundtrip. Costa Rica boasts two international airports (Juan Santamaría International Airport SJO and Guanacaste Airport LIR), receiving direct flights from many major US airports.

For Canadians, expect flights to range from $400-$800 CAD roundtrip depending on your departure city and season. If you’re planning a beach destination wedding in Guanacaste, your best bet will be the Guanacaste airport in Liberia (LIR) as it’s very close to the most beautiful beaches along the Pacific Ocean, and you can head directly to your destination right from the airport.

Is Costa Rica more expensive than the Caribbean or Mexico?

Costa Rica Wedding Planning explains that Costa Rica is the most expensive of the Central American countries to visit, but recommends budgeting realistically at a minimum of $250 per attendee, though more realistically this number should be closer to $500 per attendee.

However, Costa Rica provides amazing wedding value with its mix of affordability, high-end services, and breathtaking scenery. Costa Rica all-inclusive weddings may not be expensive because of the price tag of wedding packages, but because traveling to this unique location is more expensive than more central locations like Mexico or the Dominican Republic.

What this means for elopers: Your biggest cost difference will be flights. Once you’re in Costa Rica, elopement costs are comparable or even better value than Caribbean options because you’re getting extraordinary natural diversity, expert local guidance, and a combined wedding-honeymoon experience in one of the world’s most biodiverse countries.

Do we need passports to elope in Costa Rica?

Yes. You’ll need valid passports for both partners, original birth certificates with recent issue dates typically within 6 months, and if previously married, original divorce decree or death certificate of former spouse. This is the same requirement for most Caribbean and international destinations.

Unlike Puerto Rico (US territory), you cannot travel to Costa Rica with just a driver’s license. However, the passport requirement also means your Costa Rican marriage will be legally recognized internationally.

How long is the flight from the US/Canada to Costa Rica?

  • From US East Coast (New York, Miami, Atlanta): 3.5-4.5 hours direct
  • From US Central (Dallas, Houston, Chicago): 4-5 hours direct
  • From US West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco): 5.5-6.5 hours direct
  • From Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver): 5.5-7 hours (often one connection)

These flight times are comparable to or shorter than many Caribbean islands, and significantly shorter than European destinations like Italy or Greece.

For European Couples (UK & EU)

Why should UK/European couples consider Costa Rica over closer Caribbean options?

While the Caribbean is geographically closer to Europe, Costa Rica offers something the Caribbean can’t match: Costa Rica is known for its dense rainforests that make up almost a quarter of its landscape, filled with vibrant flowers and exotic wildlife, a wild wonderland of rainforests and celebrated national parks.

Costa Rica advantages for Europeans:

  • Unique biodiversity: The country’s dedication to eco-tourism and environmentally-conscious travel sets it apart from other spots around the world, with well-managed and welcoming tourism infrastructure offering everything from thrilling zip-line outings to catamaran tours with dolphins.
  • Adventure variety: Volcanos, cloud forests, hot springs, rainforest hikes, wildlife (sloths, monkeys, toucans, sea turtles) experiences you cannot find in the Caribbean
  • Year-round tropical climate: No hurricane season concerns like the Caribbean
  • “Pura Vida” culture: Costa Rica doesn’t just offer stunning backdrops; it offers transformation. The moment you arrive, “pura vida” becomes more than a greeting, it becomes the foundation of your marriage story.
  • Combined wedding + adventure honeymoon: Multiple ecosystems within hours of each other

Caribbean advantages for Europeans:

  • Shorter flights (8-9 hours vs. 11-13 hours to Costa Rica)
  • Postcard white-sand beaches with turquoise water
  • More familiarity if you’ve visited Caribbean islands before

Bottom line: If you value once-in-a-lifetime adventure, biodiversity, and eco-conscious travel over convenience, Costa Rica is worth the extra flight time.

How do flight costs and times compare from Europe?

Flight times from UK/Europe to Costa Rica:

  • London: 11-13 hours (typically one connection through US hub like Miami, Houston, or Atlanta)
  • Paris/Amsterdam/Frankfurt: 12-14 hours (one connection)

Flight costs: Expect €600-€1,200 per person depending on season and how far in advance you book. Yes, this is more than flying to the Caribbean (€400-€700), but consider:

  1. You’re combining your wedding AND honeymoon in one destination
  2. The experience diversity in Costa Rica means you don’t need a second honeymoon destination
  3. When planning destination weddings, air fare is a major consideration for your guest count, but for an elopement with just the two of you, the extra flight cost is offset by the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Is Costa Rica safe for European travelers?

Yes. Costa Rica is one of the most politically stable and safe countries in Latin America. Costa Rica has no armed force and is one of the most prosperous and stable nations in Latin America since it became independent in the 19th century. Costa Rica was ranked as the greenest country in the world in 2009.

The country has a well-developed tourism infrastructure, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas. As your photographer and local guide, I’m bilingual (English-Spanish) and communication barriers dissolve with my language skills, making your planning process smoother and opening doors to authentic local experiences most elopement couples miss.

Can we combine our Costa Rica elopement with a European honeymoon extension?

Absolutely! Many European couples do: Costa Rica elopement → fly to Barcelona, Paris, or Italy for a second honeymoon chapter. This gives you the adventure + relaxation combination. Or vice versa, Europe first, then Costa Rica for your ceremony.

As a photographer with experience in both Costa Rica and Barcelona, I understand this dual-destination mindset. I’ve traveled as a photographer with equipment to many countries in America and Europe, and I’m experienced in managing permits when required for specific locations.

What about language barriers in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s official language is Spanish, but you won’t face language barriers for your elopement. As your elopement planning consultant, I’m bilingual with English-Spanish language skills, eliminating communication barriers and opening doors to authentic local experiences.

Most tourism professionals, officiants, and vendors speak English. I’ll handle all coordination, ensuring smooth communication with every local partner, from attorneys for legal ceremonies to florists and accommodation providers.

Costa Rica Specific Elopement Questions

Is it legal to get married in Costa Rica?

Yes, marriages performed in Costa Rica are legally recognized internationally. So long as you follow the marital laws of Costa Rica, your marriage is legal and recognized. Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion, or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Costa Rica.

What documents do I need to get married in Costa Rica?

You’ll need valid passports for both partners, original birth certificates with recent issue dates typically within 6 months, and if previously married, original divorce decree or death certificate of former spouse. All documents must be apostilled or authenticated before arriving in Costa Rica, and documents in languages other than Spanish must be officially translated.

Lawyers handle marriages and the paperwork ranges from $400 to $700. It’s quite simple to get married but you need to coordinate with a lawyer beforehand. The higher price would be if you want documents translated and notarized in English so you’re able to also register the marriage in your home country.

As your photographer, I can connect you with trusted, bilingual attorneys who handle this process regularly and make it completely stress-free.

How long do you need to be in Costa Rica before getting married?

There is no waiting period, you can legally marry the day you arrive. However, I recommend arriving at least 1-2 days before your ceremony to:

  • Adjust to the timezone and recover from travel
  • Meet with your officiant to sign paperwork
  • Scout your ceremony location if desired
  • Simply relax and settle in before your big day
  • Have a buffer for any travel delays

This approach ensures you’re rested, present, and fully able to enjoy your elopement experience.

What is the best time of year to elope in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has two seasons: Rainy season from May to mid-November, and Dry season (also called “Summer”) from December to April. The Caribbean coast is the exception and has rain throughout the year, the Pacific coast is drier.

Dry Season (December-April): Known as the high and dry season, these are Costa Rica’s “summer” months when the sun shines all day, every day, and daytime temperatures soar. December and January are fresh off the wet season so they’re typically breezy and still very green. February and March have calmer weather but drier landscapes. This is peak wedding season, book 3-6 months in advance.

Green Season (May-November): Costa Rica’s green season sets the country ablaze with every hue and shade of green. The landscapes are spectacular, waterfalls run thick, and tropical flowers explode with blooms. It will probably rain every day, sometimes for hours. BUT, you’ll have fewer tourists, better rates, and some of my most dramatic, romantic photos happen in misty rain or right after storms when the light is magical.

My recommendation: February-March for optimal weather, or July-August for a sweet spot of green landscapes with shorter, isolated showers.

Where are the best places to elope in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica doesn’t just offer stunning backdrops, it offers transformation. You can exchange vows standing barefoot on golden sands as waves provide your ceremony soundtrack, beneath a waterfall in a private rainforest sanctuary, or toasting to forever as the sun sets over the Pacific in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Top regions:

  • Guanacaste (Pacific Beaches): Ideal for sunset beach elopements with golden sand and crashing waves. Tamarindo offers rustic and romantic beaches for adventurous couples. Papagayo Peninsula provides luxurious settings with amazing beaches.
  • Manuel Antonio: Stunning combination of jungle and Pacific beaches
  • Arenal: Majestic volcano views, the popular La Fortuna Waterfall elopement destination, and many destination wedding venues. This captivating town has one of the most perfect weathers in the country, ideal for couples seeking a blend of adventure and tranquility.
  • Monteverde: Cloud forest with misty, romantic settings
  • Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo): Stunning jungle and waterfall settings with white-sand beaches in the southern region

As a Costa Rica native with over 10 years as a Costa Rica elopement photographer, I’ve captured intimate celebrations across various landscapes and know the hidden gems most tourists and other photographers never discover.

Do we need permits to get married at beaches or parks in Costa Rica?

It depends on the location, public beaches don’t require them for small ceremonies. Private, resorts, and villas have their own policies.

All my elopement packages include permit acquisition and national park fees, so you never have to worry about this bureaucracy. I know which spots require permits, how to obtain them efficiently, and equally beautiful alternative locations that don’t require paperwork hassles.

Can we have a few guests at our Costa Rica elopement?

Most elopements include 10-15 guests or fewer. Costa Rica is perfect for intimate destination weddings! Your guests can witness your ceremony and then everyone can celebrate together with activities, dinners, or beach time.

Just keep in mind you’ll need at least 2 witnesses who are not related to you for legal ceremonies. If you’re having friends at your wedding this will suffice. If you’re eloping privately, your venue or vendors may count as witnesses.

With intimate knowledge of Costa Rica’s hidden gems and local connections, I eliminate the stress of planning from afar, navigating language barriers, and researching endless options. Communication barriers dissolve with our English-Spanish language skills, making your planning process smoother.

How does the planning process work with you?

Step 1:

We’ll meet virtually to discuss your dream elopement. I’ll learn about your relationship, what makes you feel alive, and what you envision for your day. No need to have any plans yet, turning dreams into reality is my specialty.

Step 2:

With your vision in mind, I’ll create a custom proposal with location options, timeline suggestions, and logistical recommendations. We’ll refine this plan together until it perfectly reflects what you want.

Step 3:

As your day approaches, I’ll handle the details, connecting you with trusted vendors, finalizing your timeline, and ensuring every element is in place. You’ll receive preparation guides, packing recommendations, and continuous support.

Can you help us plan our Costa Rica elopement beyond photography?

Yes! As your elopement planning consultant, I provide location scouting and planning, assistance with location permits, timeline planning optimized for Costa Rica’s magical light, accommodation research for the perfect stay, seasonal weather planning (dry vs. green season), local vendor coordination and recommendations for your marriage or civil marriage, sunrise/sunset timing for optimal light in different regions, authentic Costa Rican restaurant recommendations, and continuous support before, during, and after your adventure.

Your elopement isn’t just about photos—it’s about crafting an unforgettable Costa Rican adventure. I’m dedicated to ensuring every moment feels uniquely you, from sunrise coffee overlooking the Pacific to sunset toasts on a private beach.

What if it rains on our Costa Rica elopement day?

Costa Rica’s tropical climate means rain is always possible, especially during green season. But here’s the truth: I’ve shot in every weather condition imaginable, and some of my most dramatic, romantic photos happen in misty rain or right after storms when the light is absolutely magical.

We’ll always have backup location options (covered areas, indoor spaces with gorgeous light), and I bring weather protection for equipment. Many couples find that a little rain adds adventure and creates unique photos they wouldn’t have otherwise. Trust that with over 10 years of Costa Rican experience, I know how to make any weather work beautifully for your story.

How soon after our elopement will we receive our photos?

For packages that include it: You’ll receive sneak peeks in 72 hours, perfect for sharing the exciting news with family and friends on social media. Your complete gallery of fully edited high-resolution images will be delivered within 2-3 weeks through a beautiful online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints directly. All images come with full print rights.

Why is your pricing all-inclusive?

Your Costa Rica elopement should be about the experience, not the logistics. That’s why everything is included from the moment you start planning with me to the delivery of your final gallery. All my elopement packages include my travel costs within Costa Rica, transportation between locations, planning and coordination fees, and all permit acquisition costs if the location requires them. You’ll never be surprised by additional photographer travel fees. The price you see is the price you pay, whether we’re exploring Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio’s beaches, or Monteverde’s cloud forests.

The only additional costs would be your own travel, accommodation, and any specific vendor services you choose to add outside your package (celebrant, hair & makeup, florals, etc.).
