One question I’m frequently asked is, “When is the best time for wedding photos in Costa Rica?” Today, I’m sharing my insider knowledge about the perfect Wedding Photography Lighting conditions across different regions of our beautiful country.

As photographers, we often say we’re “writing with light” – in fact, the word photography literally means that in Greek! The quality, direction, and color of light dramatically impact your wedding photos. Before diving into specific regions, let’s explore how natural light changes throughout the day:

The Magic of Golden Hour

There’s a reason photographers worldwide chase the “golden hour” – that magical time during the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. During these precious moments:

• The light becomes softer and more diffused
• Shadows are less harsh and more flattering
• Everything bathes in a warm, golden glow
• Contrast is reduced, making it easier to capture details in both highlights and shadows

For weddings, this often means scheduling your ceremony 2-3 hours before sunset, so we can capture portraits during this perfect light.

Northern Zone (La Fortuna, Arenal, Monteverde)

Best Months: January through April

The mountainous Northern Zone offers dramatic lighting as clouds move through the landscape.

Timing Recommendations:

• Dry Season (Jan-April): Late morning ceremonies (11:00 AM) work well
• Green Season: Morning events (9:00-10:00 AM) are safest
• Year-Round: Plan for cloud cover and sudden light changes

Based on climate patterns we’ve observed over recent years, here are some special considerations if you’re planning a 2025 wedding:

• April-June 2025: Based on recent trends, we can anticipate the Pacific regions may continue experiencing above-normal rainfall patterns, particularly in the Central and Southern Pacific areas. I’d recommend morning ceremonies to avoid afternoon showers. Meanwhile, the Caribbean coast will likely continue its drier pattern, potentially making this an excellent time for Caribbean weddings.

• July-August 2025: After analyzing the patterns from previous years, I expect the “veranillo” (little summer dry period) may vary in length, but the Central Valley, Central Pacific, and South Pacific regions should have favorable conditions. This could be a hidden gem period for weddings during what tourists typically consider “rainy season.”

• September-November 2025: Historically, these months show the Pacific North, Central Pacific, and Central Valley experiencing heavier rainfall, while the Caribbean coast often enjoys its driest period. This trend will likely continue, making the Caribbean coast particularly attractive for fall weddings.

• Temperature: Climate patterns suggest 2025 will continue the warming trend we’ve seen in recent years, likely with temperatures above historical averages across Costa Rica. This means scheduling ceremonies for early morning or late afternoon will be even more important for comfortable wedding experiences.
