35+ Best Wedding Venues in Costa Rica: Beaches, Rainforest Villas & Luxury Resorts

35+ Best Wedding Venues in Costa Rica: Beaches, Rainforest Villas & Luxury Resorts

Choosing a venue is usually the first major decision when planning a Costa Rica destination wedding.

Most couples begin with a feeling rather than a spreadsheet.

Maybe you are imagining a long weekend with your closest people at a private villa overlooking the Pacific. Maybe you want a relaxed beach ceremony where everyone can stay together at an all-inclusive resort. Or perhaps you want to exchange vows somewhere surrounded by rainforest, waterfalls, and the silhouette of Arenal Volcano.

Costa Rica offers all of those possibilities, but the right venue is not simply the one with the prettiest photographs.

Your choice affects your budget, guest experience, weather plan, transportation, privacy, accommodation options, and the rhythm of the entire wedding weekend.

A luxury resort in Peninsula Papagayo, a beachfront celebration in Tamarindo, a private villa in Manuel Antonio, and an intimate rainforest venue near La Fortuna can all be beautiful. But they create very different experiences.

I’m Christopher Alga, a Costa Rica wedding photographer and filmmaker with more than 15 years of experience documenting destination weddings around the country. I created this guide to help couples compare the venues that are genuinely worth exploring, understand the practical differences between regions, and build a realistic shortlist.

This is not an endless directory. It is a starting point for finding a venue that fits the way you want your wedding to feel.

Important Pricing Note

Costa Rica wedding venues do not all price weddings in the same way.

Some resorts offer published wedding packages. Others create custom proposals based on guest count, season, catering, accommodation, and room blocks. Private villas usually charge for accommodation and add a separate event fee. Restaurants and beach clubs may work with minimum food-and-beverage consumption rather than a rental fee.

The prices below were shared o me by couples, other vendors or colleagues, they are useful starting points, not final quotes. Always confirm inclusions, taxes, room-block requirements, and current availability directly with the venue.

How Couples Actually Choose a Wedding Venue in Costa Rica

The easiest way to narrow down your options is to answer a few practical questions before falling in love with a specific property.

1. Do You Want a Resort Experience or a Private Villa?

A resort usually makes the logistics simpler.

Your guests can stay on-site, transportation becomes easier, and you have access to established catering and event teams. Many all-inclusive resorts also offer predictable packages, which can make the early budgeting process less intimidating.

A private villa offers a more immersive and personal experience.

It can feel like a complete wedding-weekend takeover rather than a single event. Villas are especially appealing for intimate groups, multi-day celebrations, private dinners, and couples who want their closest people together in one place.

The trade-off is that villa weddings often involve more planning. Rentals, catering, transportation, noise restrictions, rain plans, and guest accommodation need to be considered carefully.

2. Is Your Priority the Beach, Rainforest, Volcano, or Guest Experience?

Each region of Costa Rica creates a different atmosphere.

Guanacaste is known for sunny beaches, dramatic sunsets, and easier access through Liberia International Airport. It is the safest starting point for couples prioritizing warm weather, resorts, and simple guest logistics.

Peninsula Papagayo is the strongest option for ultra-luxury resort weddings with privacy, polished service, and a high-end guest experience.

Manuel Antonio combines rainforest, ocean views, wildlife, and private villas. It feels more lush and immersive than the dry landscapes of northern Guanacaste.

Arenal and La Fortuna offer volcano views, hot springs, waterfalls, and a deeper rainforest experience. These locations are especially appealing for intimate weddings and elopements.

Santa Teresa and Nosara attract couples who want surf culture, wellness, privacy, and a less conventional atmosphere.

The Central Valley and Central Pacific offer garden venues, mountain settings, coffee estates, ocean-view hotels, and easier access from San José.

3. How Much Travel Do You Want Your Guests to Manage?

Costa Rica is a small country, but driving times can be deceptive.

A venue near Liberia International Airport is often much easier for guests than a remote villa reached by smaller roads. That does not make the remote location a bad choice. A more secluded property can become part of the experience.

But it helps to understand the trade-off before inviting 100 guests.

For weddings with a large international guest list, the easiest areas are generally:

  • Peninsula Papagayo
  • Gulf of Papagayo
  • Playa Conchal
  • Tamarindo
  • Hacienda Pinilla

For smaller, experience-driven celebrations, you can consider:

  • Manuel Antonio
  • Arenal and La Fortuna
  • Santa Teresa
  • Nosara
  • Monteverde
  • Dominical and Uvita
  • Osa Peninsula

4. Are You Planning a Single Wedding Day or a Full Destination Weekend?

If your guests are traveling to Costa Rica, the wedding often becomes a multi-day experience.

You may want to plan:

  • A welcome dinner
  • Sunset cocktails
  • A beach afternoon
  • The wedding day
  • A farewell brunch
  • A catamaran trip
  • A hot-springs visit
  • A waterfall adventure
  • A relaxed pool day

Some venues are designed for this rhythm. Others work better as a beautiful setting for one main event.

Iconic Luxury Wedding Venues in Costa Rica

These venues define the upper end of destination weddings in Costa Rica.

They are visually memorable, internationally recognized, and worth understanding even if they exceed your original budget. They set the standard for what is possible.

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Ultra-luxury beachfront resort
Access: Approximately 30–45 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Custom proposal required
Published starting price: Marpesia wedding package from $6,550 for 2–6 guests

Why Couples Choose It

Four Seasons is one of the most refined destination-wedding properties in Costa Rica.

The draw is not simply the scenery. It is the level of service, the private beaches, the ocean-view lawns, and the ability to create a complete wedding weekend without asking guests to manage complicated logistics.

The resort offers multiple indoor and outdoor event spaces, allowing couples to plan anything from an intimate ceremony to a larger custom-designed celebration.

The published Marpesia package is designed for 2–6 guests and includes an events specialist, ceremony-location choice, symbolic officiant, floral credit, ceremony arch, two-hour photography package, and a private four-course dinner for two. Larger weddings require a custom proposal.

Best for: High-budget weddings where privacy, service, and guest comfort matter as much as the ceremony itself.

Important to know: The $6,550 figure is a micro-wedding starting point, not the expected cost of a larger Four Seasons wedding.

Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Ultra-luxury resort immersed in nature
Access: Approximately 40 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Custom proposal required
Pricing: Custom proposal required

Why Couples Choose It

Nekajui is one of the newest luxury properties in Costa Rica and one of the most interesting additions to Peninsula Papagayo.

The resort combines ocean views, contemporary architecture, private-feeling spaces, nature-focused experiences, and the service associated with the Ritz-Carlton Reserve collection.

This is not the venue for couples seeking a conventional ballroom wedding. It is better suited to celebrations where design, exclusivity, and the landscape are central to the experience.

Best for: Design-conscious couples planning an elevated celebration with a quiet, private identity.

Important to know: Pricing and guest capacity should be requested directly from the resort because the property is newer and proposals are highly customized.

Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Contemporary luxury resort
Access: Approximately 30–45 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Up to 500 guests depending on event space
Pricing: Custom proposal; food-and-beverage minimums and room-block requirements may apply

Why Couples Choose It

Andaz works especially well for couples who want luxury without excessive formality.

The architecture is modern, the property feels immersed in tropical forest, and the range of event spaces makes it possible to plan a complete destination weekend with different moods.

Main Event Spaces

  • El Jardín: Up to 500 guests
  • Casa de Playa: Up to 300 guests
  • Studio 1: Up to 200 guests
  • Gaio Pool: Up to 200 guests
  • The Patio: Up to 150 guests
  • Studios 2, 3, and 4: Up to 30 guests each

Best for: Nature-forward couples planning welcome drinks, a wedding celebration, and a farewell event in one property.

Important to know: Published guides reference seasonal food-and-beverage minimums and room-block requirements. Confirm the current thresholds directly with the resort before budgeting.

Villa Punto de Vista Estate

Location: Manuel Antonio
Style: Private staffed luxury estate
Access: Approximately 2.5–3 hours from San José International Airport
Event capacity: Up to 100 guests
Overnight capacity: Up to 54 guests when both villas are reserved
Pricing: Accommodation plus a separate event site fee

Why Couples Choose It

Villa Punto de Vista offers the privacy of a private villa with the service level of a small resort.

The estate sits within a 2.5-acre rainforest setting overlooking the Pacific. Couples can reserve Villa Punto de Vista, Villa La Isla, or both villas together.

The full estate includes up to 18–19 bedrooms and sleeps up to 54 guests. The villa team helps coordinate local transportation, overflow accommodations, tours, and guest logistics.

Published Accommodation Pricing

Villa La Isla:

  • Sleeps 8–24 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $20,876

Villa Punto de Vista:

  • Sleeps 10–30 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $27,872

  • Four nights during high season: from $38,084

Combined estate:

  • Sleeps up to 54 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $46,660

Add taxes and fees. Wedding-event site fees apply separately.

Best for: Multi-day villa weddings where the couple wants their closest people staying together in one private setting.

Important to know: This is not a simple venue-rental fee. It is a private-estate experience with accommodation, staff, breakfast, transportation support, and event fees layered together.

Arenas Del Mar

Location: Manuel Antonio
Style: Boutique beach and rainforest resort
Access: Near Manuel Antonio National Park
Capacity: Up to 35 guests
Pricing: Custom proposal

Why Couples Choose It

Arenas Del Mar is designed for smaller weddings.

The experience centers on Playitas Beach, direct access to the sand, rainforest surroundings, and an in-house team that manages the event without outside handoffs.

The guest-list limit is intentional. It keeps the celebration personal and lets the natural setting do most of the decorating.

Best for: Couples who want a small, thoughtful beach wedding with rainforest behind them and the Pacific in front of them.

Important to know: This is not a venue for a large reception. The cap of 35 guests is part of its identity.

What Does a Costa Rica Wedding Venue Cost?

The venue is only one part of the total destination-wedding budget.

In Costa Rica, the final cost depends on:

  • Region
  • Season
  • Guest count
  • Accommodation requirements
  • Room-block minimums
  • Food-and-beverage minimums
  • Site fees
  • Catering
  • Bar service
  • Rentals
  • Floral design
  • Lighting
  • Transportation
  • Rain-plan infrastructure
  • Planner fees
  • Taxes and service charges

Typical Starting Points

All-Inclusive Resort Packages

Entry-level ceremony packages may begin around $1,000–$3,000, sometimes complimentary with qualifying bookings.

A larger private reception, upgraded décor, entertainment, and guest additions increase the total significantly.

Luxury Resort Weddings

Published micro-wedding packages may begin around $6,500, while a larger celebration at an ultra-luxury resort requires a custom proposal.

The final wedding-weekend budget can rise considerably once accommodation, catering, events, and design are included.

Private Villas

Private villas may charge:

  • Accommodation for several nights
  • A separate wedding-event fee
  • Catering and bar service
  • Rentals
  • Staffing
  • Transportation
  • Additional taxes and fees

A villa event fee may begin around $1,000–$4,000, but luxury-estate stays can reach tens of thousands of dollars before the event design is added.

Beach Clubs & Restaurants

Beach clubs often use a minimum-consumption model rather than a simple rental fee.

This can work well for couples who want a relaxed reception and do not need their venue to provide accommodation.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Costa Rica Wedding Venue

Guest Capacity & Layout

  • What is the realistic capacity for a seated dinner?
  • Is the cocktail-style capacity different?
  • Where can the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing happen?
  • Can the reception remain outdoors after sunset?
  • Is there an indoor or covered rain backup?

Accommodation

  • How many guests can stay on-site?
  • Is a room block required?
  • Is a full buyout required?
  • Are there nearby accommodation options for overflow guests?
  • Are children allowed?

Pricing

  • Is the quoted price a venue-rental fee, wedding package, or minimum consumption?
  • Are catering and bar service included?
  • Are taxes and service charges included?
  • Are rentals, tables, chairs, lighting, and sound included?
  • Are there additional fees for outside vendors?
  • Does the venue require a planner?

Logistics

  • How far is the venue from the nearest international airport?
  • Will guests need shuttles?
  • Is the road accessible for large vans or buses?
  • Is there parking?
  • Are there noise restrictions or curfews?
  • Where can the after-party happen?

Weather

  • What happens if it rains?
  • Is the backup space genuinely suitable for the full guest list?
  • Is the venue exposed to strong wind?
  • What time does the property recommend for an outdoor ceremony?
  • Does the venue have experience adapting timelines during rainy season?

Vendors

  • Can we bring an outside photographer and filmmaker?
  • Is there a preferred-vendor list?
  • Is outside catering allowed?
  • Are there restrictions on amplified music, drones, or décor installations?

Working With Crissorama

Choosing a venue is not only about finding a beautiful view.

Each region works differently.

Beaches in Guanacaste offer open landscapes and dramatic sunsets, but ceremony timing matters because of heat, wind, and strong midday light.

Rainforest locations near La Fortuna create depth, texture, and atmosphere, but weather can change quickly.

Manuel Antonio sits somewhere in between, with dense jungle meeting the Pacific coast.

Private villas create a more personal rhythm, but transportation, rain plans, and event flow require careful attention.

I document weddings through a mix of documentary photography, editorial composition, analog film, and cinematic video when the story calls for it.

The goal is not to turn your wedding into a photo shoot.

It is to help you choose a setting and timeline that allow you to be present, enjoy your people, and experience the place you traveled so far to reach.

FAQ: Planning a Destination Wedding in Costa Rica

What Is the Best Region for a Destination Wedding in Costa Rica?

Guanacaste is usually the easiest region for a larger destination wedding because it offers beaches, resorts, private villas, established vendors, and access through Liberia International Airport.

Manuel Antonio works especially well for private villas and rainforest-meets-ocean scenery.

Arenal and La Fortuna are excellent for couples prioritizing volcano views, hot springs, and nature.

Santa Teresa and Nosara suit couples who want a more relaxed, surf-oriented, and less traditional atmosphere.

What Is the Best Luxury Wedding Venue in Costa Rica?

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is one of the strongest options for ultra-luxury service and a polished guest experience.

Nekajui offers a newer, design-conscious alternative.

Villa Punto de Vista is one of the best choices for a private-estate takeover.

The right answer depends on whether you want a resort, private villa, beach setting, or rainforest experience.

What Is the Best All-Inclusive Wedding Venue in Costa Rica?

The Westin Reserva Conchal is a strong choice for couples who want a polished all-inclusive experience on a beautiful beach.

Secrets Papagayo works well for adults-only celebrations.

Planet Hollywood and the Riu properties are useful for larger, lively, family-friendly groups.

What Is the Best Venue for a Small Wedding in Costa Rica?

Arenas Del Mar is designed specifically for celebrations of up to 35 guests.

Villa Buena Onda is another strong choice for intimate groups who want a private villa near Liberia Airport.

Sueño del Mar, Nantipa, Amor Arenal, and Blue Mist are also worth exploring.

How Much Does a Costa Rica Wedding Venue Cost?

A simple all-inclusive resort package may begin around $1,000–$3,000.

A private villa may charge an event fee from approximately $1,000–$4,000 plus accommodation, catering, rentals, and transportation.

Ultra-luxury resort weddings and large private-estate buyouts can cost significantly more.

Always confirm what the quoted figure includes.

Is a Private Villa Better Than a Resort?

A private villa is better for privacy, immersion, and multi-day time with your closest people.

A resort is usually better for a larger guest list, simpler logistics, accommodation, and built-in weather backup.

When Should We Book a Costa Rica Wedding Venue?

For a popular resort, private villa, or peak-season date, begin your search approximately 12–18 months in advance.

Christmas, New Year’s week, February weekends, and other popular dates may require more time.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Costa Rica Wedding?

The dry season, generally December through April, is the most popular period for beach weddings in Guanacaste.

The green season brings lusher landscapes, fewer crowds, and occasional afternoon showers.

The best month depends on the region and the atmosphere you want.

Do We Need a Wedding Planner?

For a private villa, multi-day celebration, or wedding with several vendors, hiring a local planner is highly recommended.

Some resorts provide an in-house coordinator, but it is still important to understand whether that person manages the full planning process or primarily coordinates the venue.

Costa Rica Wedding Photography Packages

Planning a destination wedding in Costa Rica already comes with enough moving parts.
Travel logistics, unfamiliar vendors, time zones, and a place you may not know yet.

Your photography shouldn’t add stress to that.

That’s why my packages are built around clarity and calm, not hourly limits or hidden costs.

  • No surprise fees
  • No clock-watching
  • No wondering if you booked “enough hours”

Just complete, honest coverage adapted to your day as it naturally unfolds.

Check Availability for My Wedding Date

A Different Way to Think About Coverage

Most photographers sell hours.
Six. Eight. Ten.

I don’t.

Your wedding doesn’t happen in fixed blocks, and your photography shouldn’t feel like a meter running in the background.

  • Coverage adapts to your day, not the other way around
  • No pressure if things run late or shift
  • A calmer experience where you stay present

This matters even more in Costa Rica, where light, weather, and timing are always changing.

Why Couples Choose This Approach

After 15+ years and 300+ weddings, most couples tell me the same thing:

It wasn’t just the photos.
It was how easy everything felt.

They could relax, be themselves, and trust the process.

If you’re looking for something natural, without pressure or performance, we’ll likely work very well together.

What Your Wedding Day Feels Like

What It Feels Like to Be Photographed This Way

One thing couples often tell me after their wedding is simple:
“I didn’t feel photographed. I just felt present.”

    That’s intentional.

    Getting Ready
I arrive quietly and document what’s already happening, the anticipation, the atmosphere, the small moments you don’t notice. Nothing is staged or repeated.

    The Ceremony
I move with intention and stay out of the way. Your guests experience the moment fully, and your photos reflect it exactly as it felt.

    Portraits (20–30 minutes)
This isn’t a photoshoot. It’s a pause in the day.
We walk, talk, and let everything settle. I guide you with light and positioning, then step back so your connection leads.

    The Reception
I follow the energy of the room. No interruptions, no pulling you away. Just honest moments as they unfold.

    Throughout the Day
You stay present. I take care of the rest.

Most couples tell me afterward they barely noticed me, and later realized everything was captured.

    That balance comes from experience.

Factors That Influence Costa Rica Wedding Photography Pricing

Location Within Costa Rica: Popular tourist areas like Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, and the Central Valley may command higher prices due to increased demand and accessibility.

Experience and Expertise: Photographers with over a decade of experience capturing Costa Rica weddings, like myself with 15+ years and hundreds of weddings, often provide more reliable results and comprehensive local knowledge.

Package Inclusions: The difference between basic coverage and comprehensive packages significantly impacts pricing. Premium packages typically include engagement sessions, albums, extended coverage, and additional locations.

Travel Requirements: While many Costa Rica photographers include travel within the country, some may charge extra for remote locations or multi-day celebrations.

Time of Year: Peak season (December through April) may see higher demand and pricing, while green season offers more flexibility.

Budgeting Tips for Your Costa Rica Destination Wedding

    Budget Allocation Guidelines

Understanding what percentage of wedding budget goes to photography is crucial for destination weddings. Photography typically accounts for 10-15% of your total wedding budget. For a destination wedding in Costa Rica, this investment becomes even more crucial since you can’t recreate the day if something goes wrong.

When couples ask “how much do couples typically spend on wedding photos in Costa Rica?” the answer varies by total budget:

    Sample Budget Allocations:

    •$20,000 total budget: $2,000 – $3,000 for photography
    •$30,000 total budget: $3,000 – $4,500 for photography
    •$50,000 total budget: $5,000 – $7,500 for photography

Smart Budgeting Strategies for Destination Weddings

These wedding photography budget tips for destination weddings in Costa Rica will help maximize your investment:

Start Planning 6-12 Months in Advance: Early booking often secures better pricing and ensures availability during your preferred dates.

Prioritize Photography: Since you can’t recreate your wedding day, invest in quality photography first, then allocate remaining funds to other elements.

Reserve 10% for Unexpected Costs: Destination weddings can include surprise expenses, so build in a buffer.

Consider Off-Peak Dates: Weddings during green season (May through November) may offer more negotiating flexibility.

Bundle Services: Some photographers offer package deals when you book multiple sessions (engagement, wedding, trash-the-dress).

Getting the Most Value from Your wedding photography budget

    Research and Prioritization

Review Complete Galleries: Look beyond social media highlights to see full wedding galleries, ensuring consistent quality throughout the day.

Invest in Experience: A photographer familiar with Costa Rica’s unique challenges (weather, lighting, locations) provides better value than someone learning on your wedding day.
Check Local Expertise: Photographers with extensive Costa Rica experience know the best locations, timing for optimal light, and backup plans for weather.

    Smart Negotiation Strategies

Customize Packages: Ask about adjusting packages to fit your specific needs rather than requesting blanket discounts.

Payment Plans: Many photographers offer payment schedules spreading costs over several months.

Off-Peak Advantages: Consider weekday weddings or green season dates for potential savings.

Value-Added Negotiations: Instead of asking for lower prices, negotiate for additional value like extra coverage hours or complimentary sessions.

Ready to start planning your Costa Rica Wedding?

If you’re currently planning your wedding in Costa Rica and want photography that feels natural, intentional, and editorial, you can explore my approach here:

They Eloped in The Most Biologically Intense Place on Earth | Osa Peninsula Elopement

Osa Peninsula Elopement. Rebecca and Pascal eloped in one of the most remote, untouched corners of Costa Rica: The Jaguar’s Jungle lodge. Situated on the wild coast of Drake Bay, their day was not a performance, it was a lived experience.

Choosing to elope in the Osa Peninsula is an act of intention. It is a decision to prioritize the experience over the event. For Rebecca and Pascal, the rainforest, the ocean, and the raw energy of the wild became the primary witnesses to their vows. My role was not to direct, but to document, to preserve the emotional rhythm, the atmosphere, and the movement of a day lived in total presence.

    The Story: A Hybrid Approach

This day was documented through two distinct but complementary mediums: cinematic film and documentary photography.

The film is built on the natural soundscape of the Osa, the rhythm of the Pacific, the call of the jungle, and the quiet weight of their commitment. It is designed to preserve the feeling of being there. The photography, meanwhile, serves as an emotional archive, focusing on the texture, the light, and the un-stiff, honest moments that defined their time in Drake Bay.

The Photographer’s Perspective: Adventure as Foundation

Capturing an elopement in a boat-access location like Jungla del Jaguar is an expedition. As an artist born and raised in the tropics, navigating the heat, the humidity, and the logistical unpredictability of the jungle is second nature.

In a place this remote, the gear must be flawless and the process minimalist.

    • The Mediums: I utilized the Leica SL (Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4) for its signature color science and the Sony A7III (35mm f/1.4 GM) for its cinematic video performance.
    • The Process: By wearing these systems on a Holdfast Moneymaker, I remained mobile and unobtrusive, moving fluidly between film and photography without interrupting the flow of the day. My philosophy is to minimize technical friction so that the humanity of the story can breathe.

The Insider’s Moment: The Sunset Ritual

The whole of the Osa Peninsula acts as a secret studio. We leaned into the rhythm of the day, documenting the horseback ride along the shoreline, and then retreated to the lodge to transition into their wedding attire for the sunset.

The light hitting the trees as the sun dipped behind the Osa hills created silhouettes that were nothing short of cinematic. It wasn’t about “posing”—it was about capturing them in their element, completely free in the wild.

Expert Advice for Your Wild Elopement

If you are dreaming of a movie-like elopement, a place where it’s just you and the love of your life surrounded by the untamed wild, the Osa Peninsula is the ultimate choice.

My advice? Embrace the adventure. Don’t worry about the logistics of the rainforest; that is why you bring a visual storyteller who knows the terrain. Your only job is to be present. Choose the place that makes you feel small in the best way possible, and the rest will fall into place.

CC Beachfront Papagayo Wedding Photographer: Brittany & Michael’s Wellness-Inspired Celebration

CC Beachfront Papagayo Wedding Photographer. Planning a “wellness” resort wedding at CC Beachfront Papagayo is about embracing the natural rhythm of the ocean and the sun. For Brittany and Michael, their celebration was a beautiful reflection of this philosophy, but it came with a distinct technical challenge: the timing of their ceremony meant we were working with the most intense, harsh sunlight of the Guanacaste afternoon.

Mastering the High-Sun Challenge: Creative Exposure

Many couples fear an early ceremony because of “flat” or “harsh” lighting. However, after over 15 years of navigating the Costa Rican sun, I’ve learned to view light and shadow as creative tools rather than obstacles.

Instead of fighting the sun, I controlled the exposure to use those high-contrast shadows creatively. The result is a gallery of unique, editorial-style images that feel intentional and bold. Technical Soul: The Agility of Prime Lenses

Brittany and Michael wanted a pure documentary experience, which meant keeping the gear as unobtrusive as possible. I relied on my Canon DSLRs paired with the 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2.

Using a Holdfast Moneymaker harness, I was able to transition instantly from the wide, environmental storytelling of the 35mm to the intimate, “human-eye” perspective of the 50mm. This setup allowed me to avoid flash during the day, preserving the organic mood of the wellness resort. We only introduced artificial light during the reception to capture the high-energy, vibrant motion of the dance floor.

The Insider’s Moment: The Forest Silhouette

Between the CC Beachfront hotel and the shore lies a beautiful stretch of coastal forest. While most guests simply walk through it to reach the water, I discovered it’s the perfect scenario for wedding party portraits.

The trees provided a lush, green background that contrasted beautifully with the beach attire. As the sun began to dip, we used this forest line to create dramatic silhouettes against the golden sky. It provided Brittany and Michael with a private, shaded space for their portraits, offering a completely different aesthetic from the open sand.

Expert Advice: Why You Shouldn’t Fear an Early Ceremony

If you are planning your wedding at CC Beachfront Papagayo and are worried about a 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. ceremony due to the heat or hard light, don’t be.

Often, couples choose an earlier time to avoid the late-afternoon tropical rain showers. A photographer with deep experience in natural light can work around the “harsh” sun to deliver stunning, high-contrast images. Furthermore, an earlier ceremony buys you something incredibly valuable: more time for the cocktail hour and blue hour portraits.

Candid, vibrant images of you celebrating with friends and family during the sunset are a massive trend right now. By starting earlier, you ensure you don’t miss a single minute of that magical twilight light with your guests.

Why Unfiltered is the New Candid Wedding Photography for 2027

Unfiltered is the New Candid for 2026 Weddings. If you’ve been scrolling through wedding subreddits lately, you’ve likely felt the shift. Couples are moving away from the “staged candid”, those perfectly lit, Pinterest-perfect moments that feel more like a commercial commission than a memory. For 2026, the trend is the Experiential/Unfiltered vibe. It is a deliberate rejection of the “merely beautiful” photograph in favor of a truthful record of what actually happened.

Authenticity Over the “Conversation with Success”

We have become a visually intelligent generation exhausted by over-selected, sanitized images. We see through the shots where the shadows are too perfect and the light is suspiciously gorgeous. Perfection can feel free of what it means to be human.

My approach embraces a “conversation with failure”, allowing for the spontaneity, motion blur, and grain that act as a badge of truth. We now crave the “unflattering” close-up or the messy detail because they are cathartic and real, the complete opposite of a manufactured public image.

The Power of the “In-Between” (The B-Sides)

In traditional photography, the focus is on the beginning and the end: the walk, the kiss, the cake. But the true essence of your day lives in the discontinuities and silent connections that happen when no one is looking. I focus on the “B-Sides” of the experience, capturing the scenes that unfold in the background of what is expected.

    • Identifying the Soul: A glance or gesture that takes 1/50th of a second can give a photograph its entire life.
    • The Decisive Moment: Freezing those brief, uncanny alignments where light and human connection align naturally, without being manipulated to fit a vision.
    • The MacGuffin of Reality: Keeping the “carnal details”, the half-empty cocktail glasses or the grass-stained hem, in the frame. These details make the story “alive and real.”

An Honest Heirloom vs. The Standard Shot List

A standard shot list is a “service station” approach; it answers the simple problem of identifying a face, but the results are often “lumpen and dead.” It treats your wedding like a “sealed unit,” impervious to the messy, beautiful reality of your life.

In contrast, an unfiltered approach creates a Radical Family Archive. We are shooting for your future selves, documenting the mundane details that may seem unimportant today but will be your most treasured memories thirty years from now.

    A Legacy of Truth

A photograph is a “trace of what no longer is.” When you look back in twenty years, you don’t want to see a performance of “material bliss.” You want a record that is unimpeachable and frank, one that reproduces the texture and flavor of your actual life.

Your wedding is more than a ceremony; it is a “space of appearance.” Let’s skip the standardized poses and capture the “cruel radiance of what is.” Because in the end, a photograph with a strong story will engage your heart far longer than a technically perfect but boring image.
