Photojournalism for love stories.

You Can’t Pose This

Destination wedding photography rooted in observation, emotion, and real moments.

For couples traveling to Costa Rica from the United States, Canada, and Europe, documentary wedding photography offers something different from traditional wedding coverage. Instead of directing every moment, I photograph your wedding as it naturally unfolds.

I am a documentary wedding photographer based in Costa Rica, specializing in destination weddings, elopements, and multi-day celebrations throughout Costa Rica and Europe.

My approach combines photojournalism, editorial awareness, and quiet observation to create wedding photographs that feel alive, emotional, and deeply personal.

For Those Who Trust the Moment

What Is Documentary Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography, sometimes called wedding photojournalism, is the practice of photographing a wedding without staging, forcing, or interrupting the natural flow of the day.

A documentary wedding photographer captures:

  • the tears during the vows
  • the laughter during speeches
  • the nervous hands before the ceremony
  • the glance between parents
  • the moment after the hug, not only the hug itself
  • the atmosphere, weather, movement, and energy of the day

These are the moments that cannot be recreated later.

Unlike traditional wedding photography, documentary photography is not built around constant posing or directing. The goal is to preserve what your wedding actually felt like.

I do not believe documentary means careless. I believe it means paying close attention.

My

Documentary

Style

My work is influenced by documentary photography, cinema, and street photography.

I am always watching for the decisive moment: the brief instant when emotion becomes visible and something honest reveals itself.

My role is not to direct your wedding into a version that looks perfect. My role is to witness it with enough attention and sensitivity that the photographs reflect who you really are.

I work quietly and unobtrusively. Most couples tell me they forget I am there.

At the same time, I know when to step in gently if a portrait or family photograph needs a little direction. Documentary wedding photography does not mean ignoring beauty. It means allowing beauty to come from truth.

That is why my work often lives between documentary and editorial wedding photography.

Who Documentary Wedding Photography Is For

This is for you if:

  • You do not want your wedding to feel like a photo shoot
  • You care more about emotion than perfection
  • You want to be present with your family and friends
  • You prefer natural expressions over posed smiles
  • You want photographs that feel timeless rather than trendy
  • You are planning a destination wedding or elopement in Costa Rica
  • You love the feeling of old family photographs and honest moments

Documentary wedding photography is especially meaningful for destination weddings because there is so much happening around you that you may not see in the moment.

Later, the photographs become a way of discovering your own wedding from the perspective of the people you love.

Documentary Wedding Photography and Film Photography

Many couples who are drawn to documentary photography are also drawn to analog film.

I offer both digital and film wedding photography using 35mm and medium format film. Film works beautifully with documentary coverage because it slows the process down and emphasizes atmosphere, emotion, and texture.

For couples looking for a more timeless and tactile aesthetic, I also offer:

  • 35mm film wedding photography
  • medium format film wedding photography
  • Super 8 wedding films
  • hybrid film and digital coverage

Frequently Asked Questions About Documentary Wedding Photography

Do you pose couples at all?

Very little. Most of the day is photographed naturally and without interruption. During portraits, I may give light guidance so you feel comfortable, but I never want the photographs to feel forced or artificial.

Can documentary photography still look elegant?

Yes. Documentary wedding photography is not messy or random. My goal is to create photographs that feel both honest and visually beautiful. The images are natural, but they are still carefully composed.

Is documentary wedding photography good for destination weddings in Costa Rica?

Absolutely. Destination weddings in Costa Rica often move quickly and include changing weather, family interactions, travel, nature, and unexpected moments. Documentary photography captures all of that far better than a heavily staged approach.

Do you photograph elopements in a documentary style?

Yes. I photograph destination elopements throughout Costa Rica with the same documentary approach, focusing on the experience, emotion, landscape, and small moments that make the day personal.

Do you also offer wedding video?

Yes. I offer wedding films and documentary wedding video alongside photography for couples who want a complete record of their day.

The Truth of Your Day

A wedding is movement. Nerves. Family history. Relief. Wind that does not follow the timeline.

I am not there to polish it. I am there to witness it.

The photographs that last are rarely the ones that look the most perfect. They are the ones that remind you exactly what it felt like to be there.

If you are looking for a documentary wedding photographer in Costa Rica for your destination wedding, elopement, engagement session, or family celebration, I would love to hear your story.
