If you’re planning a destination wedding in Papagayo, you’re choosing more than a beautiful coastline. You’re bringing people together in a place most of your guests may be experiencing for the first time, and choosing a photographer who will be responsible for preserving what that experience actually felt like.
I’m Christopher Alga, the photographer behind Crissorama, a Costa Rica destination wedding photography and storytelling studio. I photograph weddings, elopements and wedding weekends throughout Guanacaste, including the Papagayo region.
My approach combines documentary wedding photography with an editorial eye. I don’t want your wedding day to become a production built around photographs. I’m there to pay attention, anticipate what is happening, give you direction when it genuinely helps, and leave space for the moments that don’t need any direction at all.
Papagayo gives me a particularly interesting environment to work in. The coastline moves between sheltered beaches, rocky headlands and coves, while the surrounding landscape shifts between tropical dry forest and carefully designed luxury resorts. The light can be intense, the wind can change the feel of a beach, and sunset can shape the transition from ceremony into the rest of the evening.
That means photographing a Papagayo wedding isn’t simply about finding a beautiful beach.
It’s about understanding the people, landscape, light and rhythm of the day, and knowing when each one deserves your attention.

What Is Papagayo Actually Like?
Papagayo is different from many of Costa Rica’s other wedding destinations because the luxury development is part of the destination itself.
The region combines a naturally rugged Pacific coastline with a highly developed hospitality environment. Around Peninsula Papagayo you’ll find luxury resorts, private residences, golf, marina infrastructure and concierge-driven experiences, while beyond the resort landscape the surrounding Guanacaste environment is defined by dry forest, rocky coastline, sheltered bays and wildlife.
That contrast is part of what makes Papagayo interesting.
You can spend the morning on a boat, return to a private villa or resort, celebrate beside the ocean and still have the infrastructure of a major luxury destination around you.
It is also one of the more practical Costa Rican destinations for guests arriving internationally. Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is the natural gateway to the region, making Papagayo considerably easier to reach than some of Costa Rica’s more remote wedding destinations.
Papagayo vs. Peninsula Papagayo
These names are often used interchangeably, but they aren’t exactly the same thing.
The Gulf of Papagayo is the larger geographic region along the northern Pacific coast of Guanacaste.
Peninsula Papagayo is the specific gated development around Bahía Culebra where several of the region’s most prominent luxury resorts and private residences are located.
This distinction becomes important when you’re researching your wedding.
A venue described online as being in “Papagayo” might actually be in the wider Gulf rather than inside Peninsula Papagayo.
Nearby destinations such as Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá and Playas del Coco belong to the broader Papagayo region, while Peninsula Papagayo is a much more specific geographic and hospitality environment.
If you’re comparing wedding venues, I recommend looking beyond the word “Papagayo” and checking the actual location of the property.
It can change the experience considerably.
From My Photographer’s Notebook: Papagayo Is More Than a Beautiful Beach
There are plenty of photographs of Papagayo that prove it is beautiful.
That’s not particularly interesting to me.
What interests me is what happens when you put people inside that landscape.
A wedding party walking back from the beach.
A father seeing his daughter before the ceremony.
Friends sharing a drink while the sun disappears.
A couple escaping for ten minutes before dinner.
A group of people who live in different countries suddenly sharing the same table.
The dry forest, the cliffs, the ocean and the sunset give those moments a setting.
The people give them meaning.
That’s what I want your photographs to preserve.
Why Choose Papagayo for Your Wedding?
Papagayo works particularly well for couples who want nature without giving up comfort.
The region’s sheltered bays provide calmer water than many exposed Pacific beaches, making the destination particularly appealing for families and multi-generational groups.
Your guests can swim, explore the coast, take boat trips, snorkel, dive, relax by the pool or simply spend time together without everyone needing to be an experienced surfer.
The climate is another advantage. Papagayo sits in the dry northwestern part of Costa Rica, with a pronounced dry season from December through April.
And unlike a destination where every photograph looks like it was made on the same beach, Papagayo gives you different environments within a relatively compact area.
You have:
Pacific beaches.
Rocky headlands.
Dry tropical forest.
Luxury architecture.
Private villas.
A marina.
Wildlife.
That gives a wedding photographer much more to work with than a single beach backdrop.
Is Papagayo the Right Costa Rica Wedding Destination for You?
Papagayo isn’t necessarily the best choice for everyone.
If you’re looking for a bohemian surf town, independent restaurants, barefoot spontaneity and a destination that feels less developed, you may prefer somewhere like Nosara, Santa Teresa or Tamarindo.
Papagayo has a different personality.
It is:
- polished
- serviced
- resort-oriented
- private-feeling
- luxury-focused
- easier to organize for larger groups
It can also be more expensive.
But that’s exactly the reason many couples choose it.
If the wedding is bringing together parents, grandparents, children and friends from different countries, the convenience of having accommodation, restaurants, activities, pools, beaches and event infrastructure nearby can be worth a lot.
Papagayo isn’t trying to be the most bohemian part of Costa Rica. And it doesn’t need to be.
It is the place to consider when your idea of a destination wedding includes both the Pacific and a high level of service.
Papagayo Wedding Venues
Papagayo has an unusual concentration of luxury wedding properties, ranging from ultra-luxury resorts to all-inclusive hotels and private villas.
I’ve organized the main options by the experience they offer rather than simply listing them.
Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo
One of the signature luxury properties on the peninsula, with views across Culebra Bay and access to Playa Virador.
Playa Virador is particularly distinctive because the beach is framed by dramatic cliffs, creating a much stronger sense of place than a flat stretch of coastline.
The property can accommodate large destination celebrations while also giving couples access to the wider resort experience.
Best for: large luxury weddings, multi-day celebrations and couples who want a highly serviced destination.
Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
Nekajui is one of the newest luxury additions to Peninsula Papagayo, opening in late 2025.
The property includes an open-air wedding pavilion, chapel, lawns, ballroom and access to Niri Beach Club.
One detail I find particularly interesting from a photography and timeline perspective is the movement between different parts of the property. The funicular connecting areas of the resort means that transportation itself becomes part of the wedding-day logistics.
Best for: contemporary luxury weddings, editorial environments and couples looking for a newer ultra-luxury experience.
Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort
Andaz combines forest, Culebra Bay views, gardens, pools and event spaces.
It also gives you more than a beach as a photographic environment.
The architecture, vegetation and relationship between the resort and landscape can become part of the visual story.
Best for: couples who want a luxury resort experience with varied environments and a more contemporary atmosphere.
Planet Hollywood Costa Rica
Planet Hollywood offers a different side of Papagayo’s resort experience.
It’s an all-inclusive property on Playa Manzanillo with a large accommodation inventory and wedding configurations for larger groups.
Best for: couples who want an all-inclusive wedding where guests can stay, eat and celebrate within one resort environment.
Secrets Papagayo
Secrets is an adults-only all-inclusive property with a smaller-scale wedding experience.
The property sits around Arenilla Beach, which is worth knowing about because the beach has dark volcanic sand rather than the classic white-sand appearance often associated with Costa Rica.
That isn’t necessarily a disadvantage.
It simply creates a different visual environment.
Best for: adults-only destination weddings and couples looking for an all-inclusive experience on a smaller scale.
Private Villas in Papagayo
For smaller weddings, a private villa can change the entire idea of the wedding weekend.
Instead of one venue hosting one event, the house becomes part of the story.
You might have:
arrival → welcome dinner → getting ready → ceremony → dinner → celebration → morning after
When everyone is staying together, the wedding can feel less like an event inside a resort and more like a few days shared with the people closest to you.
Best for: intimate destination weddings, families and couples who value privacy and flexibility.

Papagayo Wedding Photography Locations
Papagayo gives you a surprisingly varied set of photographic environments.
Playa Virador
Dramatic cliffs, pale sand and calm Pacific water make Virador one of the strongest visual locations on Peninsula Papagayo.
The cliffs can also create directional light and deep areas of shadow later in the day, which means timing matters.
Playa Prieta
Prieta has a quieter and more intimate character.
The sheltered beach and nearby villas create opportunities for photographs that feel relaxed rather than monumental.
Playa Nacascolo
With particularly calm water, Nacascolo works well for couples and families who want to interact with the ocean rather than simply photograph beside it.
Playa Blanca & Playa Huevos
These smaller coastal environments provide another option when you want something more secluded and less recognizable as a traditional resort beach.
Marina Papagayo
The marina gives us something completely different.
Boats, docks, reflections and architecture create an editorial environment that can break up a wedding gallery dominated by sand and ocean.
And sometimes that’s exactly what a destination wedding needs.
How to Choose the Right Papagayo Wedding Venue
Don’t choose your venue only by looking at the ceremony photograph.
Ask yourself:
Where will everyone stay?
How much of the weekend do we want to spend together?
Do we want a resort experience or a private property?
How important is beach access?
How much privacy do we actually want?
How will guests move between ceremony, cocktails and reception?
And from a photography perspective:
Where does the light fall?
What happens when the sun gets too strong?
Where can we go if the beach is crowded?
What other environments are available nearby?
How much time does it take to move between them?
Those questions often tell you much more about a venue than the wedding brochure does.

How I Photograph a Wedding in Papagayo
The mistake I want to avoid is making every Papagayo wedding look like a Papagayo advertisement.
Beautiful beach.
Beautiful couple.
Beautiful sunset.
Repeat.
Instead, I look for the things that make your particular wedding different.
The friend who keeps making everyone laugh.
Your parents watching from the side of the ceremony.
Someone jumping into the water before dinner.
The moment everyone realizes the rain has passed.
A quiet conversation on the balcony.
The landscape outside your villa early in the morning.
The people who traveled thousands of miles to be there.
The beach matters.
But the people experiencing the beach matter more.
My job is to notice the relationship between the two.
Papagayo Weather & the Best Time to Get Married
Papagayo is located in one of Costa Rica’s driest regions.
The general dry season runs from December through April, while the green season extends from May through November. Northern Pacific Guanacaste can become exceptionally dry during the early part of the year.
For couples planning a dry-season wedding, that reliability is one of Papagayo’s strongest advantages.
But there is another side to the climate that matters for photography.
Heat and wind.
The tropical sun can be intense, while seasonal trade winds can become strong across the Pacific lowlands.
That affects:
- ceremony comfort
- veils
- hair
- dresses
- flowers
- candles
- sound
- outdoor dining
- portraits
So I don’t think the best wedding timeline is simply the one with the most daylight.
It’s the one that puts the important moments in the best combination of light, temperature, wind and experience.
Can You Have a Papagayo Wedding During Rainy Season?
Absolutely.
The green season requires more flexibility, but it doesn’t mean your wedding day will be raining continuously.
Pacific Costa Rica often has periods of clear weather followed by heavier rainfall, and the light after a storm can be remarkable.
For a green-season wedding, I prefer having a realistic backup plan while still building the day around the possibility of beautiful outdoor conditions.
Rain isn’t automatically something that ruins the photographs.
Sometimes it changes them.
Planning Your Papagayo Wedding Around Sunset
Sunset shouldn’t simply appear in your timeline as:
“5:30 PM — sunset portraits.”
The light is doing more than creating a pretty background.
As the sun drops, the temperature changes, the contrast softens and the landscape starts to look completely different.
Then comes blue hour.
That transition can become part of the wedding rather than a reason to disappear from your guests for a long portrait session.
We might photograph a few minutes together after the ceremony, return to your guests, photograph cocktail hour, then step outside again as the light changes.
The photographs can follow the evening instead of controlling it.
Things to Know Before Booking a Papagayo Wedding
Ask about outside photographer fees
Some resorts charge additional fees for outside photographers and other vendors.
The research found reported fees ranging from hundreds to more than $1,000 depending on the property and circumstances, so this is something to confirm directly with your venue rather than assume.
Ask:
“What is your current outside photographer and videographer policy?”
And:
“Does the fee change if the photographer stays at the resort?”
Ask exactly where the ceremony takes place
“Papagayo” doesn’t tell you enough.
A ceremony on a beach, lawn, terrace or ballroom creates a completely different experience.
Ask how guests move around the property
Some resorts have significant elevation changes, stairs, shuttles or other transportation between spaces.
Build that into your timeline.
Ask about the weather backup
Even in dry Guanacaste, green-season weddings should have a real backup plan.
The goal isn’t to expect rain.
It’s to avoid being surprised by it.
Papagayo vs. Tamarindo, Nosara & Santa Teresa
Papagayo isn’t simply a more luxurious version of every other Costa Rica beach destination.
It has a different identity.
Papagayo
Luxury resorts, private villas, calm water, concierge service, marina, golf and highly developed guest infrastructure.
Tamarindo
More of a beach town, with surf, restaurants, nightlife, hotels and a more active public beach environment.
Nosara
Boutique hospitality, wellness, yoga, jungle and a more independent, bohemian atmosphere.
Santa Teresa
Surf, boutique properties, rugged coastline and a more informal, youthful atmosphere.
The right choice depends on what you want your guests to experience.
Papagayo is strongest when luxury, service, accessibility and guest comfort are part of the vision.
If you want something more spontaneous, independent or bohemian, another Costa Rican destination may be a better fit.
The Costa Rica Beyond the Resorts
One of the things I like about photographing Papagayo is the contrast between the developed resort environment and the ecosystem surrounding it.
The region sits within Guanacaste’s tropical dry forest.
You can encounter:
- scarlet macaws
- monkeys
- iguanas
- coatis
- tropical birds
- dolphins
- rays
- sea turtles
- reef fish
The Gulf of Papagayo itself has an exceptionally diverse marine environment, while the surrounding forests and coastline provide another layer of wildlife and landscape.
This matters because the destination doesn’t end at the resort gate.
The natural environment is part of what your guests have traveled to Costa Rica to experience.
Are Papagayo Beaches Actually Private?
Not technically.
Costa Rican beaches are public up to the high-tide line, even when they are located inside a gated luxury development.
That means a beach can feel extremely secluded while still being public beach territory.
For a wedding, the more useful question isn’t:
“Is this a private beach?”
It’s:
“How private will this beach actually feel when we’re there?”
That depends on the property, access, time of day and exact location.
It’s one more reason why knowing the destination beyond the venue brochure matters.
Turning Your Papagayo Wedding Into a Wedding Weekend
Papagayo is particularly well suited to destination weddings where the celebration extends beyond the ceremony.
Your guests can spend their time:
- swimming
- snorkeling
- diving
- sailing
- fishing
- exploring the coastline
- visiting nearby beaches
- playing golf
- relaxing at the spa
- enjoying the restaurants and resorts
- exploring the wider Guanacaste region
That gives everyone permission to experience the destination differently.
Some guests will want an adventure.
Some will want a massage.
Some will want to sit by the pool with a book.
Some will want to get on a boat.
And some will happily do nothing at all.
A good destination wedding gives all of them room to enjoy the trip.
