about wedding photography in Costa Rica

Wedding photography in Costa Rica

Why do you specialize in?

My wedding photography style is a blend of documentary wedding photography with editorial elegance. I capture the raw, unscripted moments of your day, ensuring that each image feels timeless—like it could be featured in a magazine. Whether you’re having a destination wedding in Costa Rica, an intimate elopement, or a lavish celebration, my goal is to tell the story of your day through authentic, emotional moments.

How do you ensure you capture our personality in the photos?

Understanding your unique story is key. Before your wedding, I like to sit down and get to know you both—how you met, what makes you laugh, and your vision for the day. This helps me weave your personalities into the images, creating candid wedding photography that truly reflects who you are. Whether you’re getting married in Manuel Antonio, Santa Teresa, or having a Flamingo Beach wedding, I’m there to document your love story with intention.

How do you handle low-light or nighttime weddings?

Whether you’re having a beach wedding in Costa Rica at sunset or a lively indoor reception, low-light conditions are no problem. I use advanced equipment and techniques to ensure your Costa Rica wedding photos are beautifully lit, regardless of the time of day. From Arenal volcano weddings to intimate celebrations in Nosara, I create stunning images even in challenging lighting.

What happens if the weather is bad on our wedding day?

Rain or shine, your day will be stunning through my lens. I’ve done wedding photography in Costa Rica during all kinds of weather, from tropical rains to bright sunny days. Costa Rica’s natural beauty shines through in every season, and I’m always prepared to adapt. Whether it’s a dramatic sky over a Las Catalinas wedding or a moody backdrop in Uvita, I’ll ensure your Costa Rica wedding photos reflect the magic of your day.

How much time should we allocate for wedding photos?

For the best results, I recommend around one hour for pre-ceremony shots, 30 minutes for family portraits, and 20–30 minutes for couple portraits, ideally during the golden hour. If you’re having a beach wedding in Tamarindo, Flamingo Beach, or Playa Conchal, this timing ensures we capture the perfect light. The rest of the time, I’ll be documenting the natural flow of the day, from start to finish.

Do you travel for destination weddings?

Absolutely! I specialize in destination weddings in Costa Rica and am always open to traveling worldwide. Whether you’re planning a wedding in Guanacaste, Papagayo Peninsula, or a remote elopement in La Fortuna, I’m ready to travel. My wedding photography packages include simple, transparent travel fees, ensuring your day is seamless.

How many photos do we receive, and how are they delivered?

You’ll receive between 500 and 800 edited images, depending on the package. Each photo tells the complete story of your wedding, from the ceremony to the smallest details. The images will be delivered through a shareable, online gallery. If you want something tangible, I offer custom albums for your Costa Rica wedding photography experience.

Do you offer engagement sessions as part of the package?

Yes! Engagement sessions are available in some of my Costa Rica wedding photography packages or can be added upon request. They’re a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day and explore stunning locations. Whether you’re in San Jose, Santa Teresa, or Barcelona, it’s a fun, relaxed way to capture this special time in your lives.

What is your backup plan if you can’t attend our wedding?

In the rare event that I can’t attend, I work with a network of trusted costa rica wedding photographers who share my style and approach. Your day is too important, and I ensure that someone capable and experienced will be there to document your wedding, whether it’s in Manuel Antonio or a Barcelona city wedding.

Do you work with a second photographer or assistant?

Yes, for larger weddings, I often bring a second shooter to ensure that no moment is missed. This is especially helpful for weddings with many moving parts, like those at large venues such as Four Seasons Costa Rica or Villa Punto de Vista. A second photographer can be added to Collection 2 at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions
about weddings in Costa Rica

  • How much is the average wedding in Costa Rica?

For a wedding with 50 guests, your total cost could range from $17,550 to $27,550. This estimate encompasses essential elements such as the venue, catering, and, of course, hiring a wedding photographer in Costa Rica.

  • How much are most wedding photographers?

On average, wedding photographers in Costa Rica charge between $2,800 and $3,500 for six hours of coverage. This price generally includes a single photographer, basic editing, and a digital gallery of high-resolution images.

  • How much do the best wedding photographers cost?

The best wedding photographers in Costa Rica typically charge between $4,500 and $6,000 for full-day coverage. These prices reflect the photographer’s skill, experience, and high level of service, and extra features like a second shooter, extra photo session, HD video, etc.

  • Is a good photographer worth it for a wedding?

Yes, hiring a good wedding photographer in Costa Rica is the best investment you can make for your wedding, as they will preserve the memories of your special day forever. As the day unfolds, your photographer captures the fleeting emotions and moments that you may miss, yet will cherish for a lifetime.

  • When is the best time to get married in Costa Rica?

The best time for a destination wedding in Costa Rica is from January through April, when the weather is dry and sunny—perfect for an outdoor ceremony in venues like Hacienda Pinilla or Pangas Beach Club. If you love the lush, green landscape, consider June or July, when the occasional rain showers enhance the rainforest without disrupting your day.

  • What are the legal requirements for getting married in Costa Rica?

Getting married in Costa Rica is straightforward. Foreigners need only a valid passport, birth certificate, and proof of marital status. Costa Rica wedding planners or lawyers can help with the paperwork, making it stress-free. Your wedding will be internationally recognized, so your vows here are legally binding worldwide.

  • Can same-sex couples get married in Costa Rica?

Absolutely! In 2020, Costa Rica legalized same-sex marriage, making it a welcoming destination for all couples.

  • How long should I stay in Costa Rica before my wedding?

Arriving a few days before the ceremony is a good idea. This gives you time to finalize any last-minute paperwork and settle into the beauty of your surroundings.

  • Can we have both a legal ceremony and a symbolic ceremony?

Yes, you can have both. Many couples opt for a legal civil ceremony to handle the paperwork, then a symbolic ceremony to celebrate their love in a more personal, creative way. Whether it’s a beachside vow exchange or a rainforest blessing, a symbolic ceremony gives you the freedom to design a wedding that speaks to your heart.

  • What is the average cost of a wedding in Costa Rica?

The cost depends on your location and guest count. For example, a wedding at a Costa Rica resort like Dreams Las Mareas or a luxury villa in Papagayo Peninsula can range from $17,550 to $27,550 for 50 guests. This includes ceremony, reception, and legal fees, offering an affordable yet stunning alternative to weddings in other parts of the world.

    Here’s a rough breakdown:

    • Ceremony Costs: Around $5,000 for venue rental, decorations, and music.

    • Reception Costs: Between $200 to $400 per guest, covering food, beverages, and entertainment.

    • Marriage License: Legal fees range from $1,500 to $2,000.

  • How do we handle travel and accommodation for our guests?

When planning travel and accommodations for your guests, keep these tips in mind:

    • Group Bookings: Many hotels offer group rates, which can reduce costs for your guests.

    • Transportation: Arrange shuttles or transport between the airport and the venue, and provide your guests with information about local taxis or rental cars.

    • Activities: Costa Rica is full of adventures. Recommend local tours, like hiking, beach days, or even volcano excursions to make their stay memorable.

  • What are some local customs or traditions we should incorporate?

Incorporating local customs can enhance the authenticity of a wedding in Costa Rica. Some popular traditions include:

    • Serenade: In a romantic tradition, the groom serenades the bride the night before the wedding.

    • Las Arras (Thirteen Gold Coins): During the ceremony, the groom gifts the bride with thirteen gold coins as a symbol of his commitment.

    • Live Music and Dancing: Costa Rican weddings are full of life, with vibrant music and dancing that turn every reception into a lively celebration.

    • Is it easy to find English-speaking vendors?

Yes! Most wedding vendors in Costa Rica, including photographers, planners, and caterers, speak English, especially in popular tourist areas. You’ll find plenty of professionals who are experienced in helping international couples plan their dream wedding.
