Every celebration I’ve documented here has taught me something different, but a few lessons continue to appear over and over again.
Tamarindo Has a Different Rhythm
One of the biggest differences between Tamarindo and many other wedding destinations is its pace.
Everything feels a little slower.
Guests spend the morning walking on the beach with a coffee in hand, couples enjoy breakfast overlooking the ocean, and no one seems to be in a hurry.
Rather than fighting that rhythm, I encourage couples to embrace it. A destination wedding shouldn’t feel rushed. The slower pace is part of what makes Tamarindo so memorable.
Sunset Isn’t Just for Photos
Most people think about sunset because of the photographs.
I think about it because it changes the entire atmosphere of the day.
As the light becomes softer and the temperature begins to drop, everyone naturally moves closer to the beach. Guests gather with a drink in hand, conversations slow down, and the excitement of the ceremony gives way to celebration.
The photographs are beautiful, of course, but what makes sunset special is the feeling it creates.
Every Beach Has Its Own Personality
People often think of Tamarindo as a single beach, but one of the things I enjoy most is exploring the coastline around it.
Playa Langosta feels quieter and more intimate.
Playa Conchal offers one of the most beautiful shorelines in Costa Rica.
Private villas create a completely different atmosphere from a resort.
Even walking a few minutes in either direction can completely change the mood of your photographs.
Finding the location that matches your personality is often more important than choosing the most famous beach.
Resort or Villa? Think About the Experience
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the happiest couples aren’t necessarily the ones who book the most luxurious venue.
They’re the ones who choose the experience that feels right for them.
Some love the convenience and energy of a beachfront resort where everything is taken care of.
Others prefer the privacy of a villa where breakfast, the ceremony, dinner and dancing all happen in the same place with the people they love.
Neither approach is better.
They’re simply different ways of experiencing Tamarindo.
The Best Moments Usually Weren’t Planned
Some of my favorite photographs weren’t part of the timeline.
They’re the quiet conversations after dinner.
Parents watching the sunset before the ceremony begins.

A walk back to the villa beneath the stars.

That’s one of the reasons I photograph weddings in a documentary style. Rather than trying to create moments, I prefer to recognize them when they naturally happen.

The longer I work in Tamarindo, the more I realize that people don’t come here simply because it’s a beautiful beach.

They want to watch the sun disappear into the Pacific Ocean knowing they’ve chosen a place that reflects who they are.
