Costa Rica Wedding Guide: Planning a Destination Wedding in Costa Rica

A local’s guide

Planning a Costa Rica wedding starts with three decisions: where you want to be, what kind of experience you want your guests to have, and how much of the country you want the celebration to include. A destination wedding in Costa Rica can mean a relaxed beach weekend in Guanacaste, a rainforest celebration near Arenal, a private villa above the Pacific, or something much smaller and more intimate.

This guide brings the practical pieces together so you can compare venues, costs, legal requirements, weather, transportation, guest logistics, and the way each region actually behaves.

Same-sex marriage has been fully legal since 2020, and many resorts proudly host LGBTQ+ weddings with dedicated rainbow wedding packages and inclusive policies.

Costa Rica Wedding Costs at a Glance

Wedding budgets vary by guest count, venue, season, and how much is included by the property. For many destination weddings with roughly 20–50 guests, a realistic overall planning range is around $25,000–$45,000, while intimate celebrations can be much simpler and luxury multi-day events can go far beyond that.

For resort inclusions and package comparisons, see Costa Rica wedding packages. For realistic totals, fixed costs, hidden expenses, and current budget examples, see the Costa Rica wedding cost guide.

How much does it cost to get married in Costa Rica?

Costs vary by guest count, venue, season, and the kind of celebration you are building. For current realistic totals and examples, use my Costa Rica wedding cost guide.

Is Costa Rica cheaper than Mexico or other destinations?

It can be, but not automatically. Venue style, exchange rates, travel logistics, and the number of imported or luxury services matter more than the country name alone; the Costa Rica wedding cost guide breaks those differences down.

What’s the average cost of a destination wedding in Costa Rica?

For many 20–50 guest destination weddings, a realistic planning range is around $25,000–$45,000. See the Costa Rica wedding cost guide for the current baseline and examples by wedding style.

How much does a small elopement in Costa Rica cost?

Small celebrations can cost much less because guest-dependent expenses fall quickly, while fixed costs such as photography, planning, and travel remain. The Costa Rica wedding cost guide explains how those fixed and variable costs behave.

What are the hidden costs of a Costa Rica wedding?

Taxes, transport, room-block requirements, vendor travel, rentals, permits, and weather backups are the expenses couples most often underestimate. I keep the current list in the Costa Rica wedding cost guide.

How much do photographers cost for Costa Rica weddings?

Photography is a fixed creative investment rather than a per-guest cost, and pricing varies by coverage, film, albums, second photographers, and multi-day storytelling. The Costa Rica wedding cost guide includes photography inside the larger budget picture.

Can you plan a wedding in Costa Rica on a $10,000 budget?

Yes, but it usually means a small guest list, a simple venue or natural setting, and careful choices about the parts of the day that matter most. The Costa Rica wedding cost guide shows where budgets expand and where they can stay lean.

  • Valid passports for both partners
  • Sworn marital status affidavit (single, divorced, or widowed)
  • Divorce decree or death certificate (if applicable)
  • Two witnesses present at ceremony
  • Licensed Costa Rican lawyer or judge to officiate

Timeline & Process:

  • Start legal documentation 3-6 months before wedding
  • Documents must be apostilled in your home country
  • Spanish translations required for all documents
  • Marriage certificate processing: 6-12 weeks
  • Official certificate delivery: 2-3 months

Benefits:

  • Internationally recognized marriage

Legal Requirements to Get Married in Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers couples flexibility in making their marriage official, with options for both legal and symbolic ceremonies.

Symbolic Weddings

Advantages:

  • No legal paperwork required in Costa Rica
  • Complete ceremony flexibility
  • Any officiant can perform the ceremony
  • Focus entirely on the celebration

Recommendation: Many couples complete legal requirements at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Costa Rica, eliminating stress and paperwork complexity.

Is it legal for foreigners to get married in Costa Rica?

Yes, foreigners can legally marry in Costa Rica. The process is straightforward, but it requires a licensed Costa Rican lawyer or notary to perform the ceremony. The marriage is then registered with the Costa Rican Civil Registry. Once finalized, your marriage certificate can be validated for international recognition.

What documents do I need to get married in Costa Rica?

You’ll typically need valid passports, a completed questionnaire with your personal information, and proof of single status (an affidavit if you’re divorced or widowed). Your lawyer or planner usually guides you through the requirements and submits the paperwork. It’s important to prepare documents in advance so there are no delays before the ceremony.

Do we need a marriage license in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica does not issue marriage licenses in the same way as some other countries. Instead, the ceremony is performed by a lawyer or notary, who files the marriage directly with the Civil Registry. This makes the process simpler, but you still need to provide accurate documents and details.

Is a Costa Rican marriage recognized in the US, Canada, or Europe?

Yes, marriages performed legally in Costa Rica are internationally recognized. After your wedding, you’ll receive a marriage certificate in Spanish. Your lawyer can help you obtain an official translation and an apostille so the document is valid in your home country. The exact steps depend on your country’s requirements, but the marriage itself is legal worldwide.

Do we need a translator or lawyer to get married in Costa Rica?

You need a lawyer or notary, since they are the only professionals authorized to perform legal marriages in Costa Rica. A translator is not legally required if you speak Spanish, but for most foreign couples, having a bilingual lawyer or wedding planner is essential. They’ll make sure you understand the process and that all paperwork is handled correctly.

Can we have a symbolic ceremony instead of a legal one?

Absolutely. Many couples choose to complete the legal paperwork in their home country and then have a symbolic ceremony in Costa Rica. This can be spiritual, cultural, or completely personalized, and it removes the need for official documents, lawyers, or Civil Registry timelines. A symbolic ceremony gives you total freedom while still celebrating in paradise.

How long does it take to finalize the paperwork for a Costa Rica wedding?

After your wedding, the lawyer submits the paperwork to the Civil Registry. Processing usually takes 6–12 weeks before the official marriage certificate is issued. If you need it recognized abroad, add time for translations and apostille certification. Because of this, some couples choose the symbolic route if they want a stress-free timeline.

Light, Weather and Location: How Costa Rica Actually Behaves

Planning a wedding in Costa Rica is not just about choosing a beautiful place. It’s about understanding how that place behaves.

What looks perfect online can feel completely different in reality depending on the time of day, the season, and the environment.

Costa Rica may look small on a map, but where you choose to get married affects your timeline, your guests’ logistics, the flow of the day, and the final look of your photos. Plan realistically around three things: location, season, and your priorities. That way you don’t just pick a place that looks good online; you choose one that actually works for your wedding.

Light: Why Timing Changes Everything

In tropical locations, light is stronger and more direct than most couples expect.

Midday sun can be harsh and limiting, especially on beaches or open landscapes. Shadows become harder, colors flatten, and the experience itself can feel overwhelming.

Late afternoon, especially close to sunset, changes everything. The light softens, the temperature drops, and the atmosphere becomes more natural and comfortable. This is when locations in Costa Rica feel the most honest, and when moments tend to happen more freely.

What is the best time for a wedding ceremony in Costa Rica?

For most weddings in Costa Rica, I use sunset as the anchor rather than a fixed clock time. I usually recommend holding the ceremony close to sunset, leaving enough room afterwards for portraits while the light is still soft.

If the conditions make late-afternoon rain genuinely likely, I may move the ceremony a little earlier. In Costa Rica, rain often builds around noon and the afternoon and can clear again toward the end of the day, so I do not automatically move a ceremony just because rain is possible. For elopements, a morning ceremony can make more sense when the plan is to spend the rest of the day exploring.

Weather: Embracing What You Can’t Control

Costa Rica’s weather is part of the experience, not something to fight against.

There’s a real chance it will rain at some point. The difference is whether your photographer is prepared for it.

Instead of building a day around perfect conditions, the approach is to stay flexible, adapt, and use what’s happening in real time. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Location: Every Place Works Differently

Each region in Costa Rica brings its own rhythm.

  • Beaches in Guanacaste offer open landscapes and dramatic sunsets, but require careful timing with light and heat.
  • Rainforest locations like La Fortuna bring depth, texture, and unpredictability, where weather and terrain shape the experience.
  • Coastal jungles like Manuel Antonio sit somewhere in between, with dense greenery meeting the ocean.

Knowing how to move through these environments, when to shoot, and when to step back is what allows the day to feel natural while still creating strong, intentional images.

      FAQs About Weddings Costa Rica

How much does a Costa Rica wedding cost?

Average costs range from $18,000-$50,000 for 50 guests, depending on venue type, season, and level of customization. Elopements start around $5,000, while luxury celebrations can exceed $100,000.

What documents do I need for a legal wedding?

Valid passports, sworn marital status affidavits, divorce decree or death certificate (if applicable), and two witnesses. All documents require apostilles and Spanish translations.

What’s the best season for a wedding?

December-April offers guaranteed sunshine but higher costs. May-November provides lush scenery, lower prices, and brief afternoon showers. Both seasons offer beautiful wedding opportunities.

What is the best time for a wedding ceremony in Costa Rica?

For most weddings, sunset is the anchor rather than a fixed clock time. I usually recommend a ceremony close to sunset, adjusting a little earlier only when the conditions make late-afternoon rain genuinely likely. For adventure elopements, a morning ceremony can make more sense when you want the rest of the day for exploring.

Is Costa Rica LGBTQ+ friendly for weddings?

Yes—same-sex marriage has been legal since 2020, and many resorts offer inclusive rainbow wedding packages with pride-friendly policies and specialized planning.

Can I have a beach ceremony?

Absolutely. Many resorts and public beaches allow ceremonies, but always verify permits and consider tide schedules. Some locations require special permission for large gatherings.

Do I need a wedding planner?

While resort coordinators handle basic logistics, independent planners are invaluable for complex celebrations, legal requirements, vendor coordination, and local expertise.

How far in advance should I book?

Peak season (December-April) requires 12-18 months for popular venues. Green season offers more flexibility with 6-12 months typically sufficient.

What about travel requirements for guests?

US, Canadian, and most European visitors need only valid passports (no visa required). Recommend guests have 6 months validity remaining and consider travel insurance.
