Most wedding venue guides are written from a planning perspective. This one is different. I created it from the perspective of a destination wedding photographer who works inside these environments, understanding the light, timelines, guest experience, and what actually makes a venue photograph beautifully.

This guide includes 50+ handpicked wedding venues across Europe, from iconic luxury estates to hidden gems most couples overlook.

I’m Christopher Alga, an Europe destination wedding photographer. After 18 years shooting international destination weddings in Costa Rica, Mexico and the US, I now spend a season based in Barcelona, serving as a bridge for North American couples planning their European celebrations. This guide isn’t just a list of pretty places, it’s a roadmap to the venues that offer the best light, the most seamless logistics, and the most authentic experiences for your guests.

If you have not started planning yet, part one of this series is my Europe destination wedding planning guide, which covers guest counts, budgets, planners and the lessons couples learned the hard way.

    TL;DR

    Best Wedding Venues in Europe.

If you want iconic scenery: Amalfi Coast, Santorini, Lake Como
If you want luxury without chaos: Mallorca, Andalusia, Provence
If you want value without compromise: Portugal, Croatia, Puglia
If you want intimacy & originality: Slovenia, Dolomites, Sintra

Venue hire pricing (2026 rates, budget 5 to 10% more for 2027 and 2028):

    • Cliffside villas: €5,000–€15,000
    • Luxury hotels: €15,000–€50,000+
    • Historic palazzos & châteaux: €10,000–€30,000
    • Ultra-luxury buyouts: €250,000+

Important: Prices below refer to venue hire only unless stated otherwise. Catering, bar, accommodation, and coordination are typically separate.

Where is the best place to get married in Europe?

There is no single best place, and anyone who gives you one is selling something. The honest answer is that Europe splits into about five different weddings, and which one is right for you comes down to four things: how far your guests have to fly, how much heat you want, how much you can spend per head, and how much you mind sharing the view with tourists.

    The short version:

    • If your guests are flying from the US east coast, Portugal is the shortest hop and the cheapest once they land. Lisbon is around six and a half hours from New York, and venue hire in the Alentejo starts near €2,500.
    • If you want guaranteed sun, the Greek islands, southern Spain and the Amalfi Coast deliver it from June to September. So does everyone else’s holiday, which is the trade-off.
    • If you want the Europe people picture, Lake Como, Tuscany and the French Riviera are expensive for a reason. Expect €8,000 to €30,000 for the venue alone.
    • If you would rather spend on the experience than the postcode, Puglia, Istria and inland Portugal give you the same light and the same food at a third of the price.
    • If you want somewhere nobody in your family has been, Lake Bled, Madeira and the Dolomites are still genuinely quiet, and intimate venues there start under €3,000.

The full venue list further down is organised by country. If you already know roughly where, skip ahead.

The best destination wedding locations in Europe, by what you want

Most lists rank European destinations by how pretty they are, which is not a decision you can act on. These are the trade-offs that actually change your planning.

    Cheapest per guest

The Alentejo in Portugal, from €2,500. Then Istria in Croatia and Puglia in Italy, both from around €3,000. Rural Spain and the Douro Valley sit in the same band. You are not buying a lesser wedding. You are buying one an hour inland from the expensive coast.

Shortest flights from the United States

Portugal and Ireland are the shortest, roughly six to seven hours from the east coast. Spain and France add an hour or so. Italy is usually seven to nine. Greece and Croatia almost always mean a connection, which for your guests is the difference between an overnight and a full travel day.

    Best in shoulder season

May, June, September and early October, across the whole Mediterranean. Prices drop, the heat becomes bearable, and the places empty out. Sicily and southern Spain stay warm into late October. The Dolomites work June to September and not much either side.

    Least crowded in August

Avoid the Amalfi Coast, Santorini, Mykonos and the Costa Brava. Europe takes its holiday in August and the coast fills. If August is your only window, go inland or north: Burgundy, the Loire, Istria, the Douro Valley, the Dolomites.

    Where the money goes furthest

An agriturismo or farmhouse in Portugal, Puglia or rural Spain runs €2,000 to €10,000 for twenty to eighty guests. A luxury hotel on Mallorca, in Andalusia or on the Amalfi Coast runs €15,000 to €50,000 and up. The difference between those two numbers is mostly the address.

How much does a wedding in Europe actually cost?

Venue hire alone ranges from about €2,500 to €50,000 and up, depending on the country, the season, and whether you want the place to yourself. It is the number couples underestimate most, because it is quoted separately from almost everything else.

Rough bands, for the venue only:

    • Rustic estates and villas: €3,000 to €15,000, typically 40 to 120 guests
    • Coastal and cliffside venues: €5,000 to €15,000, 30 to 150 guests
    • Châteaux and palazzos: €10,000 to €30,000, typically 80 to 150 guests
    • Luxury hotels: €15,000 to €50,000 and up, often with some services included
    • Agriturismos and farmhouses: €2,000 to €10,000, 20 to 80 guests

By country the same wedding costs very different amounts. Portugal’s Alentejo starts near €2,500. Puglia and Istria sit around €3,000. Tuscany starts at €5,000, Lake Como at €8,000, the French Riviera at €10,000. Ask five venues for the same thing and the answers will not be close.

Two questions worth asking before you compare any quotes. What is actually included, because venue hire can mean an empty field or a fully staffed property. And whether the price assumes exclusive use, because a venue that is €12,000 shared can be €40,000 to yourselves.

    Luxury wedding venues in Europe

At the top of the European market you are usually not renting a room. You are taking a property out of commission for two or three days, and the price reflects the rooms the owner is not selling while you are there.

What that looks like in practice:

    • Specific spaces inside a luxury hotel: from €15,000
    • Historic palaces and cliffside estates: €15,000 to €30,000 and up
    • Fortress and estate properties with sea views: €40,000 and up per day, usually multi-day
    • Full hotel buyouts: €150,000 and up
    • Exclusive resort buyouts: €250,000 and up, generally with accommodation included

This tier concentrates in Mallorca, Andalusia, the Amalfi Coast and the Greek islands, plus Lake Como and the French Riviera. One step below, Tuscany, Provence and the Loire hold properties with the same feel for a third of the price, mostly because they are not on the water.

How Couples Actually Choose Wedding Venues in Europe

    The mindset behind confident decisions

Most couples don’t start by comparing prices, they start by imagining how they want the wedding to feel.

The clearest decisions happen when you answer three questions first:

    1. Do you want a multi-day experience or a single statement event?
Villa buyouts favor weekends. Hotel venues work for focused celebrations.

    2. Is your priority privacy, ease, or iconic scenery?
Private estates = seclusion. Hotels = service. Coastal venues = views.

    3. Do you want guests fully immersed, or simply present?
Accommodation on-site changes the entire rhythm of your celebration.

Once those answers are clear, the right country and venue becomes obvious.

Best Wedding Venues in Europe by Country (Top Picks for 2027)

Choosing the Right Country (Not Just the Venue)

The country matters more than the specific venue. It determines guest experience, planning complexity, and the entire aesthetic of your celebration.

Working With Crissorama: What Makes It Different

I’m building my European wedding portfolio intentionally, which means you’re getting someone experienced who’s bringing fresh perspective to Mediterranean venues, not shooting the same location the same way for the 50th time.

Why North American Couples Work With Me

Planning from 5,000 miles away requires more than just a photographer; it requires a partner who understands your expectations.

    • No Transatlantic Risks: Because I am based in Barcelona for the European season, you don’t have to worry about flight delays, jet lag, or expensive transatlantic travel fees. I am already on the ground, ready to shoot.
    • Cultural & Language Ease: I speak fluent English and Spanish (and enough Italian and French to keep things moving with local venue managers). I understand the “American” flow of a wedding day, the importance of the toasts, the documentary focus on candid moments, and the need for clear, fast communication.
    • Faster Delivery for a Modern Pace: While the European industry standard is often 12 weeks for a gallery, I deliver your full, hand-edited collection within 2 weeks. You’ll also receive a 24-hour preview to share with family back home while the excitement is still fresh.
    • Two-Day Storytelling: I don’t just “show up” for the ceremony. My collections are designed to cover the full arc of your destination experience, from the welcome dinner to the farewell brunch, ensuring your gallery feels like a complete story, not just a single day.

The 2027 Aesthetic: Editorial Meets Documentary

Modern destination weddings are no longer about rigid posing. My approach for 2027 is a blend ofEditorial Polish and Documentary Honesty.

    • Editorial: I use cinematic light and the venue’s architecture to create portraits that look like they belong in Vogue.
    • Documentary: I remain a “fly on the wall” during the unscripted moments, the quiet nerves before the ceremony, the laughter at the welcome dinner, and the unguarded emotions of your guests.

This ensures your gallery is both a piece of high-end art and a truthful record of how the day actually felt.

Understanding Europe Destination Wedding Packages & Pricing

If you are just starting your planning, you’ve likely searched for “all-inclusive wedding venues in Europe” or “destination wedding packages.” It is important to know that European venues operate a bit differently than what North Americans might expect from tropical resorts.

True “all-inclusive” venue packages are rare in luxury European markets. Instead, historic châteaux, cliffside hotels, and private villas typically charge a “venue hire fee” (the cost simply to rent the space). Catering, rentals, floral design, and coordination are usually handled separately.

However, you can still achieve a completely stress-free, all-inclusive experience. The secret is hiring a turn-key planning team and securing comprehensive, multi-day vendor collections.

Because I am based in Barcelona for the Mediterranean wedding season, I partner with North American couples to provide seamless, multi-day documentary coverage across Europe, with no surprise transatlantic travel fees, no jet-lagged vendors, and a process designed to feel effortless.

    Let’s Document Your Story

As a destination wedding photographer based in Barcelona during the European season, I’m already on the ground for European weddings, making the entire process smoother, faster, and more reliable.

FAQ: Planning a Destination Wedding in Europe

How much does a luxury wedding venue in Europe actually cost?

Venue hire fees range drastically based on the country, season, and exclusivity. A beautiful rustic estate in Portugal or Andalusia might range from €3,000–€8,000, while an exclusive Lake Como villa, French Riviera palace, or Amalfi Coast hotel buyout can range from €15,000 to €50,000+ just for the space. Tip: Always ask if the quoted venue fee includes local taxes (VAT).

What is the best country for an affordable destination wedding in Europe?

If you are looking for incredible architecture and scenery without the premium price tag of Italy or France, look closely at Portugal (Sintra and the Algarve) and Spain (Andalusia and Costa Brava). They offer world-class food, stunning venues, and a much stronger value for your budget.

    Do European venues include accommodation?

It depends entirely on the venue style. “Villa buyouts” usually require you to rent the on-site bedrooms for a minimum of 2-3 nights, which is perfect for multi-day experiences with your wedding party. Historic castles and smaller boutique venues often act as “dry hire” event spaces where guests will need to book separate hotels nearby.

How to Choose the Right Venue: Questions Real Couples Use

A couple during their destination wedding in Costa Rica

Venue Must-Haves According to Couples Online

Based on actual Reddit conversations, couples prioritize:

On-site accommodation or nearby options (guests want easy access)
Within 1-2 hours of international airport (reduces travel stress)
Weather backup plans (covered spaces for rain)
Natural beauty (venues that don’t need heavy decoration)
Flexibility with outside vendors (especially photographers)

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Venue

    Capacity & Layout:

    • What’s the realistic guest capacity (seated vs. standing)?
    • Where do ceremony, cocktails, and dinner happen?
    • What’s the backup plan for weather?

    Logistics:

    • Is accommodation on-site or nearby?
    • What’s parking and guest arrival like?
    • Are there noise restrictions or curfews?

    Vendor Flexibility:

    • Can we use outside photographers/videographers?
    • Is there a preferred caterer list or can we choose?
    • What vendors are required vs. optional?

    Costs & Policies:

    • Is this venue hire only, or does it include services?
    • What’s the cancellation/postponement policy?
    • Are there additional fees (cleaning, security deposit, late-night)?
    • Is VAT included in the quoted price?

    Timing:

    • How far in advance do we need to book?
    • Can we do site visits before committing?
    • What’s the timeline for final decisions?

    Sustainability & Intentional Design

In 2027, luxury is defined byrestraint and authenticity. When choosing your venue, consider:

    • Seasonality: Choosing a venue in the shoulder season (like Spain in October or Greece in May) provides better light for photography and supports a more sustainable local tourism model.
    • Local Integration: Opting for venues that work with local farmers and artisans doesn’t just reduce your footprint, it gives your guests a far more authentic taste of the region.
