Hacienda Pinilla Wedding | A Photographer’s Guide to Guanacaste
Planning a Hacienda Pinilla wedding is different from choosing a single hotel ballroom or beachfront restaurant.
Hacienda Pinilla is a large gated community near Tamarindo, with ranchland, tropical dry forest, beaches, private villas, a Beach Club, a colonial chapel and dedicated event spaces such as Las Palapas.
That flexibility is the reason many couples choose it.
You can have a Catholic ceremony in the chapel, a sunset celebration by the ocean, a reception under palm-thatched palapas, or build a multi-day wedding around a private villa where your closest people stay together.
The trade-off is that the property is large. A Hacienda Pinilla wedding works best when transportation and guest movement are planned as carefully as the ceremony itself.

The biggest decision is which version of Hacienda Pinilla you want
Hacienda Pinilla is not one wedding venue.
That sounds obvious, but it changes the planning process.
A couple choosing Las Palapas is planning a very different wedding from a couple renting a private villa for four days. A Catholic ceremony in the chapel creates another structure entirely. A Beach Club celebration has its own guest flow and atmosphere.
The strongest weddings here usually begin with that decision.
Do you want everyone moving through one event venue? Do you want the closest people living together in a villa? Do you want a religious ceremony followed by a beach reception? Do you want the resort amenities of the JW Marriott available to part of the guest list?
Once that is clear, the rest of the weekend becomes much easier to design.
Las Palapas: the classic Hacienda Pinilla wedding space
Las Palapas is one of the most recognizable event locations inside Hacienda Pinilla.
The official venue describes two palm-thatched ranchos overlooking the ocean with a large garden area, designed for sunset celebrations and open-air events.
A current Tamarindo wedding planner lists Las Palapas for events up to around 300 guests and notes that it does not have the same 10 p.m. music cutoff associated with several public-beach venues around Tamarindo.
I would still confirm current sound and capacity rules for your exact date, because event policies can change.
From a photography perspective, this is a space where sunset timing matters enormously. The venue already gives you ocean, open sky, palms and movement between covered and outdoor areas. There is very little reason to leave the party for a long portrait session.
The colonial chapel changes what is possible
Hacienda Pinilla has something unusual for a Costa Rica beach destination: a small colonial-style chapel.
The venue specifically presents it as an option for Catholic ceremonies. The chapel does not have permanent religious fixtures, which allows couples to bring in the traditional Catholic imagery required for their celebration.
Real weddings here show how useful that can be for couples who want a formal religious ceremony without giving up the Guanacaste destination-wedding experience.
One documented wedding brought close to 100 guests to Hacienda Pinilla, held the Catholic ceremony in the chapel and continued the celebration elsewhere afterward.
That separation between ceremony and reception can work beautifully, but it makes transportation and timing more important.
The private-villa wedding is a completely different experience
Some of the most interesting Hacienda Pinilla weddings do not use a traditional event venue at all.
Couples rent a large villa, stay there with family and friends, and turn the house into the center of the wedding weekend.
One couple described renting a large villa for four days and three nights specifically because they wanted more time with their guests than a normal one-evening wedding would allow.
That is the real advantage of this format.
The villa is not only where you sleep. It becomes breakfast, pool day, rehearsal dinner, getting ready, late-night conversation and sometimes the reception itself.
There are also newer and larger villa options throughout the community, including properties designed for groups of 20, 30 or more guests. The important point is to confirm that the specific home allows events, because vacation-rental permission and wedding permission are not the same thing.
The Beach Club puts Playa Avellanas into the wedding weekend
The Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club sits directly on Playa Avellanas, with an infinity pool, restaurant, bar, wellness facilities and direct access to the coast.
Even when the wedding itself happens elsewhere inside the community, the Beach Club can become part of the guest experience.
That matters for a destination wedding because guests have something easy to do without the couple planning every hour.
They can spend a beach day there, eat, swim, surf or simply meet other guests around the pool.
If you are using the Beach Club for an event, confirm the current private-event rules separately from normal guest access. The day-pass and membership system is not the same thing as booking it for a wedding.
Transportation is the hidden planning issue
Hacienda Pinilla is large enough that you should not think of it as a walkable resort.
Guests may be staying in different villa communities, at the JW Marriott, or outside the gates around Tamarindo and Langosta.
Las Palapas, the chapel, private villas and the Beach Club are not one compact cluster.
For a wedding, that means shuttles matter.
I would build transportation into the timeline from the beginning rather than treating it as a final logistical detail.
This is especially important when guests are dressed formally, when there are older relatives or children, and when alcohol is part of the evening.
The property gives you enormous flexibility, but the price of that flexibility is movement.
What I would pay attention to when planning the photography
At Hacienda Pinilla, I would build the photography around the route of the day.
If everyone is getting ready in a villa, marrying in the chapel and celebrating at Las Palapas, those transitions already give the story enough visual range.
I would not add unnecessary locations simply because the property is large.
Guanacaste light can also be extremely hard in the middle of the day, especially late in dry season. Ceremony timing matters more here than finding another scenic backdrop.
If the wedding is at Las Palapas or near the coast, I would protect the final part of the afternoon for the natural change in light rather than trying to manufacture portraits earlier.
The most useful photographs will still be the ones that explain how the wedding actually felt to the people who were there.
Who Hacienda Pinilla works particularly well for
I would look seriously at Hacienda Pinilla if:
- you want several venue styles inside one gated community;
- you are planning a multi-day destination wedding rather than a single event;
- you want private-villa options for family and wedding-party groups;
- you need room for a larger guest list;
- you want the option of a Catholic ceremony in a dedicated chapel;
- you like the idea of ranchland, tropical dry forest and Pacific coastline in the same wedding weekend.
I would think more carefully about it if:
- you want every guest walking easily between all events;
- you do not want to organize internal transportation;
- you prefer one hotel team managing every part of the wedding;
- you want a compact boutique-property atmosphere;
- you expect every rental villa to automatically permit events.
Hacienda Pinilla wedding photography
A Hacienda Pinilla wedding can look completely different from one couple to the next.
That is what makes it interesting.
One wedding may feel like a Catholic ceremony followed by a large coastal reception. Another may feel like four days living with your closest friends in a villa. Another may revolve almost entirely around the beach.
The photography should explain which version you chose.
I would rather document that experience honestly than make every Hacienda Pinilla wedding look like the same list of scenic locations.
