Destination Wedding Photographer

Choosing a venue is usually the first major decision when planning a Costa Rica destination wedding.

Most couples begin with a feeling rather than a spreadsheet.

Maybe you are imagining a long weekend with your closest people at a private villa overlooking the Pacific. Maybe you want a relaxed beach ceremony where everyone can stay together at an all-inclusive resort. Or perhaps you want to exchange vows somewhere surrounded by rainforest, waterfalls, and the silhouette of Arenal Volcano.

Costa Rica offers all of those possibilities, but the right venue is not simply the one with the prettiest photographs.

Your choice affects your budget, guest experience, weather plan, transportation, privacy, accommodation options, and the rhythm of the entire wedding weekend.

A luxury resort in Peninsula Papagayo, a beachfront celebration in Tamarindo, a private villa in Manuel Antonio, and an intimate rainforest venue near La Fortuna can all be beautiful. But they create very different experiences.

I’m Christopher Alga, a Costa Rica wedding photographer and filmmaker with more than 15 years of experience documenting destination weddings around the country. I created this guide to help couples compare the venues that are genuinely worth exploring, understand the practical differences between regions, and build a realistic shortlist.

This is not an endless directory. It is a starting point for finding a venue that fits the way you want your wedding to feel.

Important Pricing Note

Costa Rica wedding venues do not all price weddings in the same way.

Some resorts offer published wedding packages. Others create custom proposals based on guest count, season, catering, accommodation, and room blocks. Private villas usually charge for accommodation and add a separate event fee. Restaurants and beach clubs may work with minimum food-and-beverage consumption rather than a rental fee.

The prices below were shared o me by couples, other vendors or colleagues, they are useful starting points, not final quotes. Always confirm inclusions, taxes, room-block requirements, and current availability directly with the venue.

How Couples Actually Choose a Wedding Venue in Costa Rica

The easiest way to narrow down your options is to answer a few practical questions before falling in love with a specific property.

1. Do You Want a Resort Experience or a Private Villa?

A resort usually makes the logistics simpler.

Your guests can stay on-site, transportation becomes easier, and you have access to established catering and event teams. Many all-inclusive resorts also offer predictable packages, which can make the early budgeting process less intimidating.

A private villa offers a more immersive and personal experience.

It can feel like a complete wedding-weekend takeover rather than a single event. Villas are especially appealing for intimate groups, multi-day celebrations, private dinners, and couples who want their closest people together in one place.

The trade-off is that villa weddings often involve more planning. Rentals, catering, transportation, noise restrictions, rain plans, and guest accommodation need to be considered carefully.

2. Is Your Priority the Beach, Rainforest, Volcano, or Guest Experience?

Each region of Costa Rica creates a different atmosphere.

Guanacaste is known for sunny beaches, dramatic sunsets, and easier access through Liberia International Airport. It is the safest starting point for couples prioritizing warm weather, resorts, and simple guest logistics.

Peninsula Papagayo is the strongest option for ultra-luxury resort weddings with privacy, polished service, and a high-end guest experience.

Manuel Antonio combines rainforest, ocean views, wildlife, and private villas. It feels more lush and immersive than the dry landscapes of northern Guanacaste.

Arenal and La Fortuna offer volcano views, hot springs, waterfalls, and a deeper rainforest experience. These locations are especially appealing for intimate weddings and elopements.

Santa Teresa and Nosara attract couples who want surf culture, wellness, privacy, and a less conventional atmosphere.

The Central Valley and Central Pacific offer garden venues, mountain settings, coffee estates, ocean-view hotels, and easier access from San José.

3. How Much Travel Do You Want Your Guests to Manage?

Costa Rica is a small country, but driving times can be deceptive.

A venue near Liberia International Airport is often much easier for guests than a remote villa reached by smaller roads. That does not make the remote location a bad choice. A more secluded property can become part of the experience.

But it helps to understand the trade-off before inviting 100 guests.

For weddings with a large international guest list, the easiest areas are generally:

  • Peninsula Papagayo
  • Gulf of Papagayo
  • Playa Conchal
  • Tamarindo
  • Hacienda Pinilla

For smaller, experience-driven celebrations, you can consider:

  • Manuel Antonio
  • Arenal and La Fortuna
  • Santa Teresa
  • Nosara
  • Monteverde
  • Dominical and Uvita
  • Osa Peninsula

4. Are You Planning a Single Wedding Day or a Full Destination Weekend?

If your guests are traveling to Costa Rica, the wedding often becomes a multi-day experience.

You may want to plan:

  • A welcome dinner
  • Sunset cocktails
  • A beach afternoon
  • The wedding day
  • A farewell brunch
  • A catamaran trip
  • A hot-springs visit
  • A waterfall adventure
  • A relaxed pool day

Some venues are designed for this rhythm. Others work better as a beautiful setting for one main event.

Iconic Luxury Wedding Venues in Costa Rica

These venues define the upper end of destination weddings in Costa Rica.

They are visually memorable, internationally recognized, and worth understanding even if they exceed your original budget. They set the standard for what is possible.

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Ultra-luxury beachfront resort
Access: Approximately 30–45 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Custom proposal required
Published starting price: Marpesia wedding package from $6,550 for 2–6 guests

Why Couples Choose It

Four Seasons is one of the most refined destination-wedding properties in Costa Rica.

The draw is not simply the scenery. It is the level of service, the private beaches, the ocean-view lawns, and the ability to create a complete wedding weekend without asking guests to manage complicated logistics.

The resort offers multiple indoor and outdoor event spaces, allowing couples to plan anything from an intimate ceremony to a larger custom-designed celebration.

The published Marpesia package is designed for 2–6 guests and includes an events specialist, ceremony-location choice, symbolic officiant, floral credit, ceremony arch, two-hour photography package, and a private four-course dinner for two. Larger weddings require a custom proposal.

Best for: High-budget weddings where privacy, service, and guest comfort matter as much as the ceremony itself.

Important to know: The $6,550 figure is a micro-wedding starting point, not the expected cost of a larger Four Seasons wedding.

Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Ultra-luxury resort immersed in nature
Access: Approximately 40 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Custom proposal required
Pricing: Custom proposal required

Why Couples Choose It

Nekajui is one of the newest luxury properties in Costa Rica and one of the most interesting additions to Peninsula Papagayo.

The resort combines ocean views, contemporary architecture, private-feeling spaces, nature-focused experiences, and the service associated with the Ritz-Carlton Reserve collection.

This is not the venue for couples seeking a conventional ballroom wedding. It is better suited to celebrations where design, exclusivity, and the landscape are central to the experience.

Best for: Design-conscious couples planning an elevated celebration with a quiet, private identity.

Important to know: Pricing and guest capacity should be requested directly from the resort because the property is newer and proposals are highly customized.

Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort

Location: Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste
Style: Contemporary luxury resort
Access: Approximately 30–45 minutes from Liberia International Airport
Capacity: Up to 500 guests depending on event space
Pricing: Custom proposal; food-and-beverage minimums and room-block requirements may apply

Why Couples Choose It

Andaz works especially well for couples who want luxury without excessive formality.

The architecture is modern, the property feels immersed in tropical forest, and the range of event spaces makes it possible to plan a complete destination weekend with different moods.

Main Event Spaces

  • El Jardín: Up to 500 guests
  • Casa de Playa: Up to 300 guests
  • Studio 1: Up to 200 guests
  • Gaio Pool: Up to 200 guests
  • The Patio: Up to 150 guests
  • Studios 2, 3, and 4: Up to 30 guests each

Best for: Nature-forward couples planning welcome drinks, a wedding celebration, and a farewell event in one property.

Important to know: Published guides reference seasonal food-and-beverage minimums and room-block requirements. Confirm the current thresholds directly with the resort before budgeting.

Villa Punto de Vista Estate

Location: Manuel Antonio
Style: Private staffed luxury estate
Access: Approximately 2.5–3 hours from San José International Airport
Event capacity: Up to 100 guests
Overnight capacity: Up to 54 guests when both villas are reserved
Pricing: Accommodation plus a separate event site fee

Why Couples Choose It

Villa Punto de Vista offers the privacy of a private villa with the service level of a small resort.

The estate sits within a 2.5-acre rainforest setting overlooking the Pacific. Couples can reserve Villa Punto de Vista, Villa La Isla, or both villas together.

The full estate includes up to 18–19 bedrooms and sleeps up to 54 guests. The villa team helps coordinate local transportation, overflow accommodations, tours, and guest logistics.

Published Accommodation Pricing

Villa La Isla:

  • Sleeps 8–24 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $20,876

Villa Punto de Vista:

  • Sleeps 10–30 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $27,872

  • Four nights during high season: from $38,084

Combined estate:

  • Sleeps up to 54 guests
  • Four nights during whale season: from $46,660

Add taxes and fees. Wedding-event site fees apply separately.

Best for: Multi-day villa weddings where the couple wants their closest people staying together in one private setting.

Important to know: This is not a simple venue-rental fee. It is a private-estate experience with accommodation, staff, breakfast, transportation support, and event fees layered together.

Arenas Del Mar

Location: Manuel Antonio
Style: Boutique beach and rainforest resort
Access: Near Manuel Antonio National Park
Capacity: Up to 35 guests
Pricing: Custom proposal

Why Couples Choose It

Arenas Del Mar is designed for smaller weddings.

The experience centers on Playitas Beach, direct access to the sand, rainforest surroundings, and an in-house team that manages the event without outside handoffs.

The guest-list limit is intentional. It keeps the celebration personal and lets the natural setting do most of the decorating.

Best for: Couples who want a small, thoughtful beach wedding with rainforest behind them and the Pacific in front of them.

Important to know: This is not a venue for a large reception. The cap of 35 guests is part of its identity.

What Does a Costa Rica Wedding Venue Cost?

The venue is only one part of the total destination-wedding budget.

In Costa Rica, the final cost depends on:

  • Region
  • Season
  • Guest count
  • Accommodation requirements
  • Room-block minimums
  • Food-and-beverage minimums
  • Site fees
  • Catering
  • Bar service
  • Rentals
  • Floral design
  • Lighting
  • Transportation
  • Rain-plan infrastructure
  • Planner fees
  • Taxes and service charges

Typical Starting Points

All-Inclusive Resort Packages

Entry-level ceremony packages may begin around $1,000–$3,000, sometimes complimentary with qualifying bookings.

A larger private reception, upgraded décor, entertainment, and guest additions increase the total significantly.

Luxury Resort Weddings

Published micro-wedding packages may begin around $6,500, while a larger celebration at an ultra-luxury resort requires a custom proposal.

The final wedding-weekend budget can rise considerably once accommodation, catering, events, and design are included.

Private Villas

Private villas may charge:

  • Accommodation for several nights
  • A separate wedding-event fee
  • Catering and bar service
  • Rentals
  • Staffing
  • Transportation
  • Additional taxes and fees

A villa event fee may begin around $1,000–$4,000, but luxury-estate stays can reach tens of thousands of dollars before the event design is added.

Beach Clubs & Restaurants

Beach clubs often use a minimum-consumption model rather than a simple rental fee.

This can work well for couples who want a relaxed reception and do not need their venue to provide accommodation.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Costa Rica Wedding Venue

Guest Capacity & Layout

  • What is the realistic capacity for a seated dinner?
  • Is the cocktail-style capacity different?
  • Where can the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing happen?
  • Can the reception remain outdoors after sunset?
  • Is there an indoor or covered rain backup?

Accommodation

  • How many guests can stay on-site?
  • Is a room block required?
  • Is a full buyout required?
  • Are there nearby accommodation options for overflow guests?
  • Are children allowed?

Pricing

  • Is the quoted price a venue-rental fee, wedding package, or minimum consumption?
  • Are catering and bar service included?
  • Are taxes and service charges included?
  • Are rentals, tables, chairs, lighting, and sound included?
  • Are there additional fees for outside vendors?
  • Does the venue require a planner?

Logistics

  • How far is the venue from the nearest international airport?
  • Will guests need shuttles?
  • Is the road accessible for large vans or buses?
  • Is there parking?
  • Are there noise restrictions or curfews?
  • Where can the after-party happen?

Weather

  • What happens if it rains?
  • Is the backup space genuinely suitable for the full guest list?
  • Is the venue exposed to strong wind?
  • What time does the property recommend for an outdoor ceremony?

  • Is outside catering allowed?
  • Are there restrictions on amplified music, drones, or décor installations?

Working With Crissorama

Choosing a venue is not only about finding a beautiful view.

Each region works differently.

Beaches in Guanacaste offer open landscapes and dramatic sunsets, but ceremony timing matters because of heat, wind, and strong midday light.

Rainforest locations near La Fortuna create depth, texture, and atmosphere, but weather can change quickly.

Manuel Antonio sits somewhere in between, with dense jungle meeting the Pacific coast.

Private villas create a more personal rhythm, but transportation, rain plans, and event flow require careful attention.

I document weddings through a mix of documentary photography, editorial composition, analog film, and cinematic video when the story calls for it.

The goal is not to turn your wedding into a photo shoot.

It is to help you choose a setting and timeline that allow you to be present, enjoy your people, and experience the place you traveled so far to reach.

FAQ: Planning a Destination Wedding in Costa Rica

What Is the Best Region for a Destination Wedding in Costa Rica?

Guanacaste is usually the easiest region for a larger destination wedding because it offers beaches, resorts, private villas, established vendors, and access through Liberia International Airport.

Manuel Antonio works especially well for private villas and rainforest-meets-ocean scenery.

Arenal and La Fortuna are excellent for couples prioritizing volcano views, hot springs, and nature.

Santa Teresa and Nosara suit couples who want a more relaxed, surf-oriented, and less traditional atmosphere.

What Is the Best Luxury Wedding Venue in Costa Rica?

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is one of the strongest options for ultra-luxury service and a polished guest experience.

Nekajui offers a newer, design-conscious alternative.

Villa Punto de Vista is one of the best choices for a private-estate takeover.

The right answer depends on whether you want a resort, private villa, beach setting, or rainforest experience.

What Is the Best All-Inclusive Wedding Venue in Costa Rica?

The Westin Reserva Conchal is a strong choice for couples who want a polished all-inclusive experience on a beautiful beach.

Secrets Papagayo works well for adults-only celebrations.

Planet Hollywood and the Riu properties are useful for larger, lively, family-friendly groups.

What Is the Best Venue for a Small Wedding in Costa Rica?

Arenas Del Mar is designed specifically for celebrations of up to 35 guests.

Villa Buena Onda is another strong choice for intimate groups who want a private villa near Liberia Airport.

Sueño del Mar, Nantipa, Amor Arenal, and Blue Mist are also worth exploring.

How Much Does a Costa Rica Wedding Venue Cost?

A simple all-inclusive resort package may begin around $1,000–$3,000.

A private villa may charge an event fee from approximately $1,000–$4,000 plus accommodation, catering, rentals, and transportation.

Ultra-luxury resort weddings and large private-estate buyouts can cost significantly more.

Always confirm what the quoted figure includes.

Is a Private Villa Better Than a Resort?

A private villa is better for privacy, immersion, and multi-day time with your closest people.

A resort is usually better for a larger guest list, simpler logistics, accommodation, and built-in weather backup.

When Should We Book a Costa Rica Wedding Venue?

For a popular resort, private villa, or peak-season date, begin your search approximately 12–18 months in advance.

Christmas, New Year’s week, February weekends, and other popular dates may require more time.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Costa Rica Wedding?

The dry season, generally December through April, is the most popular period for beach weddings in Guanacaste.

The green season brings lusher landscapes, fewer crowds, and occasional afternoon showers.

The best month depends on the region and the atmosphere you want.

Do We Need a Wedding Planner?

For a private villa, multi-day celebration, or wedding with several vendors, hiring a local planner is highly recommended.

Some resorts provide an in-house coordinator, but it is still important to understand whether that person manages the full planning process or primarily coordinates the venue.
