Planning a W Costa Rica wedding means choosing one of the most design-forward resorts on Playa Conchal.

The hotel sits inside Reserva Conchal in Guanacaste, surrounded by tropical dry forest and connected directly to one of Costa Rica’s most distinctive beaches. Compared with the neighboring Westin, the W feels more contemporary, more social and more intentionally styled around the W brand.

That personality matters.

This is a resort for couples who want the convenience of keeping guests together but do not necessarily want the traditional atmosphere of a large all-inclusive. The wedding can move between garden, ballroom and beach-club spaces while still feeling connected to the landscape.

What the resort actually feels like for a wedding weekend

The strongest reason to choose the W is not simply that it is on Playa Conchal.

It is the combination of a very recognizable hotel personality with a setting that still feels connected to Guanacaste.

A couple who married here recently described the beach ceremony as magical and said the reception space was beautifully set up. They also praised the food, drinks, service and the way the staff made them and their guests feel throughout the stay.

That matters because destination weddings are rarely judged only by the ceremony.

Your guests remember breakfast the next morning. They remember whether the pool felt easy. They remember whether they could get to the beach without a complicated plan. They remember the staff.

The W has enough happening on property that guests can build their own days around pools, restaurants, the beach and Reserva Conchal without the couple becoming the weekend’s travel coordinator.

The wedding spaces that matter

The Lawn

The Lawn is the W’s signature outdoor event space and the obvious option if you want the celebration to stay connected to the tropical setting.

The resort presents it for open-air ceremonies and receptions of around 150 guests. It gives you a more controlled event space than putting the entire wedding directly on the sand, while still keeping the day outdoors.

From a photography perspective, the important question here is timing. Guanacaste light becomes much more forgiving late in the afternoon, so ceremony time has a direct impact on skin tones, guest comfort and how naturally the celebration flows into sunset.

The Great Room

The combined Great Room is the major indoor option. Marriott lists it for up to 310 guests for a reception or 170 banquet-style.

I would think about this less as a disappointing rain backup and more as a real design option.

If you are marrying during green season, or simply want air conditioning and complete control over lighting and production, an indoor reception can remove a lot of uncertainty.

Zona Azul Beach Club

Zona Azul is one of the spaces that gives the W a different personality from a conventional resort wedding.

It sits near the family pool and Playa Conchal and works naturally for a welcome event, cocktail hour or after-party where you want the weekend to feel more social than formal.

That is one of the advantages of choosing a resort with several spaces that do not all look or feel the same.

The layout is part of the decision

One of the most useful things to understand before choosing the W is that the property is spread out.

A recent independent family review noted that the main buildings are roughly a five- to ten-minute walk from reception, while the beach and family-pool area can be about a ten-minute walk or a short golf-cart ride.

That is not necessarily a problem, but it becomes important on a wedding day.

Getting-ready rooms, ceremony location, cocktail hour and reception should be planned as a sequence rather than as four independent locations.

For guests with mobility issues, parents carrying small children or anyone wearing formal shoes in tropical heat, the difference between a two-minute golf-cart ride and a ten-minute walk matters more than it sounds.

I would build those movements into the timeline from the beginning instead of discovering them on the wedding day.

W Costa Rica or Westin Reserva Conchal?

Because the two hotels share Reserva Conchal, couples naturally compare them.

The simplest distinction is that the Westin Reserva Conchal is the stronger fit if your priority is a large all-inclusive environment where meals and drinks are already built into the guest experience.

The W is not a traditional all-inclusive resort. Meals and drinks are generally charged separately, which gives the weekend a different financial structure for guests.

In return, the W feels more contemporary, design-focused and nightlife-oriented. It is the option I would look at when the aesthetic and social personality of the resort matters as much as convenience.

Neither is automatically better. They create different wedding weekends.

Playa Conchal is a real part of the experience

The W has direct access to the quieter southern end of Playa Conchal.

This matters because the beach is not simply scenery behind the hotel. Guests can actually use it.

The water is often calm enough for swimming, and the sand is made from tiny shell fragments that give Playa Conchal its distinctive pale texture.

For a destination wedding, that creates something useful: guests have a reason to arrive early or stay after the wedding instead of treating the hotel as somewhere they only sleep.

From a photography perspective, I would still be careful about treating the beach as the automatic portrait location. The best photographs may happen there, but they may also happen in the architecture, the forested paths or in the social spaces where your guests are actually spending time.

What I would pay attention to when planning the photography

At a resort with this many visual possibilities, the temptation is to use all of them.

I would do the opposite.

The photography should follow the day rather than turning the wedding into a tour of the property.

If you are getting ready high on the property, marrying on the lawn and moving toward the beach around sunset, that sequence already gives us architecture, forest, changing light and coastline without taking you away from your guests for an hour.

I would also pay close attention to heat during dry season. March and April in Guanacaste can be extremely hot and visually much drier than the lush green version of Costa Rica many couples imagine.

Green season gives you more vegetation and dramatic skies, but it makes a rain plan more important.

The right timeline should work with whichever version of Guanacaste you are actually getting married in.

Who W Costa Rica works particularly well for

I would look seriously at the W if:

  • you want your guests staying together without choosing a traditional all-inclusive resort;
  • modern architecture and design are part of what you care about visually;
  • you want direct access to Playa Conchal;
  • you are planning a welcome event, wedding and after-party across different spaces;
  • you want a resort atmosphere that feels social and energetic;
  • your guest list is roughly in the intimate-to-medium destination-wedding range.

I would think more carefully about it if:

  • you want every meal and drink bundled into the room rate;
  • you want guests walking independently into a town for restaurants and nightlife;
  • you need an extremely compact property with almost no internal transportation;
  • your priority is rustic Costa Rica rather than a highly designed luxury-resort experience.

What interests me about a W Costa Rica wedding is the contrast.

You have polished architecture next to tropical dry forest. A very controlled hotel environment opening onto one of Guanacaste’s most recognizable beaches. A formal wedding happening inside a weekend that may also include bare feet, pool afternoons and friends disappearing toward the beach.

That contrast is useful for documentary wedding photography because the place already has different rhythms built into it.

I want the final photographs to show not only where you got married, but what it felt like to have everyone there with you.
