    Planning a Secrets Papagayo wedding means choosing an adults-only all-inclusive resort where most of the wedding weekend can happen in one place.

    The resort sits on the Gulf of Papagayo in Guanacaste, with tropical forest, Pacific views and a black volcanic-sand beach. It is smaller than some of the large all-inclusive properties in Costa Rica, but it is also spread across a hillside rather than built as one compact block.

    That creates a very particular type of destination wedding.

    Your guests can eat, drink, swim and stay on-site without constantly coordinating outside plans. At the same time, internal transportation matters because rooms and common areas can be separated by steep paths and elevation changes.

    If you are comparing Papagayo venues, my Papagayo wedding photographer guide gives more context on the wider area.

    The adults-only all-inclusive format is the real decision

    Secrets Papagayo makes the most sense when your guest list genuinely fits an adults-only resort.

    Everyone staying on property is 18 or older, and the resort model is designed around meals, drinks, activities and entertainment being part of the stay.

    For some destination weddings, that simplifies almost everything.

    Guests do not need to think about where dinner is, whether drinks are included or how to fill the afternoon. They can move between restaurants, pools, the beach and the spa without the couple becoming the trip planner.

    The trade-off is obvious: families with children need another solution.

    If nieces, nephews or younger siblings are central to your wedding, this is not the kind of age restriction to discover after falling in love with the venue.

    The wedding team is one of the strongest reasons to choose it

    Recent wedding reviews are unusually consistent about the on-site coordinators.

    A January 2026 couple with around 50 guests described daily communication, detailed guidance through flowers, chairs, food and venue choices, and a rehearsal that left them feeling completely prepared.

    Another couple who married here in August 2026 praised the ceremony location, food and coordinator, while a July 2026 bride who planned the wedding while working and studying full-time said the coordinator made the process feel manageable.

    That matters because destination weddings often become stressful long before the wedding day itself.

    A venue with a wedding team that is responsive before arrival can be more valuable than a property with one additional scenic ceremony option.

    The beach looks different from classic white-sand Costa Rica

    Secrets Papagayo sits along a volcanic dark-sand beach rather than the pale sand couples often imagine when they first think of a Costa Rica beach wedding.

    That is not a disadvantage, but it changes the visual character of the day.

    The darker shoreline, forested hills and Gulf of Papagayo light create a more dramatic, earthy look than Playa Conchal or some of the brighter beaches farther south.

    The resort itself promotes beach ceremonies and several ocean-view settings.

    From a photography perspective, I would treat the beach as part of the setting rather than trying to make it look like a different part of Costa Rica.

    The property is spread out

    This is the practical detail I would not ignore.

    Secrets Papagayo is built into a hillside.

    Recent guest reviews repeatedly mention rooms being up steep sections of the property and using resort shuttles to move between accommodations and common areas.

    For a normal vacation, that may simply be part of the experience.

    For a wedding, it affects the timeline.

    Getting-ready rooms, ceremony site, cocktail hour and reception should be planned as a route. Older guests, anyone with mobility limitations and guests wearing formal shoes should not be expected to improvise steep walks in tropical heat.

    I would build shuttle time into the schedule from the beginning.

    All-inclusive simplifies the guest budget

    One reason couples choose Secrets is predictability.

    The resort’s all-inclusive model covers meals, drinks and many activities as part of the stay.

    That makes the guest experience easier to understand before people travel.

    It does not mean the wedding itself is automatically free or fully included in the room rate. Wedding packages, private events, décor, upgraded food and beverage, production and other extras can still add significantly to the final cost.

    I would separate those two budgets clearly: what guests are paying for their stay, and what the couple is paying for the wedding.

    That distinction prevents “all-inclusive” from becoming misleading shorthand for “everything is included.”

    Who the resort works best for socially

    Secrets Papagayo works especially well when most of the guest group wants to spend the trip together.

    The all-inclusive setup naturally creates repeated contact: breakfast, pool time, drinks, activities and dinners.

    Recent wedding couples repeatedly mention how much their guests enjoyed the resort around the wedding itself.

    That makes the property a strong fit for couples who want the wedding to feel like a group vacation.

    It is a weaker fit when guests prefer exploring independently, staying in different neighborhoods or choosing restaurants around town every night.

    This is a resort-centered wedding weekend.

    What I would pay attention to when planning the photography

    The first thing I would plan around is movement.

    If getting ready is happening in hillside rooms and the ceremony is closer to the water, I want enough time for those transitions without turning the day into a transportation schedule.

    The second is heat and light.

    Papagayo can be extremely bright in the middle of the day, especially late in dry season. A ceremony closer to sunset gives guests more comfort and gives photographs more dimension.

    The third is keeping the couple connected to the party.

    There is no need to disappear around the resort looking for ten different backdrops. The beach, hills, forest and ocean views already create enough variation.

    The wedding should still feel like a wedding, not a resort photoshoot.

    Who Secrets Papagayo works particularly well for

    I would look seriously at Secrets Papagayo if:

    • your guest list is entirely adults;
    • you want an all-inclusive wedding weekend;
    • you want most guests staying on the same property;
    • you value a strong on-site wedding coordinator;
    • you want easy access from Liberia International Airport;
    • you like the idea of a resort-centered group vacation around the wedding.

    I would think more carefully about it if:

    • children are an important part of the wedding;
    • you want guests exploring a walkable town independently;
    • you have several guests with mobility limitations and do not want to rely on shuttles;
    • you specifically want pale white-sand beach aesthetics;
    • you prefer a private villa or boutique-property atmosphere over an all-inclusive resort.

    Secrets Papagayo wedding photography

    A Secrets Papagayo wedding works well for documentary photography because the guest group stays in one shared environment.

    People keep running into one another.

    The wedding party is at breakfast. Friends are already at the pool. Guests are having drinks before anything formal begins.

    Those moments give the final gallery more context than simply photographing the ceremony and reception.

    The resort setting should be visible, but the people should still be the story.
